Latest Steam Deck Beta update fixes slow boot time for those with way too many non-Steam games
Table of Contents
Valve continues to push out new updates for the Steam Deck. Just yesterday, a major Beta update was released that brought many improvements, and before that, we got one that focused on improving gyro controls. And now another update has arrived for the Beta channel.
While this one isn't as big as the one that was released yesterday, it still includes some important changes that many Steam Deck users will appreciate. Like always, this update is being tested in the opt-in Beta channel first before it makes its way to the stable version that all users will receive later.
What does the latest Steam Deck Beta update offer?
Non-Steam Games
- Reduced startup times for players with large numbers of non-Steam games added to the client.
- Fixed the “Browse Local Files” option not working for non-Steam games (this is only available in desktop mode).
Steam Input
Source: Steam
- Fixed missing glyphs for the Lenovo Legion Go S in Steam Input API games using the TranslateOrigin function, ex: Marvel’s Spiderman Remastered.
One of the biggest changes in this new update focuses on users who have a lot of non-Steam games added to their Steam Deck. Many players don’t just play games bought directly from Steam, as they add titles through other sources to their library as well, so they can keep everything in one place. However, for users who had a long list of these non-Steam games, the Steam Deck started to take a long time to boot up. This update addresses that problem.

Another small but helpful fix in this update addresses an issue with the “Browse Local Files” option for non-Steam games. This option lets you quickly open the folder where your game files are stored. Before this update, it wasn't working correctly for non-Steam games, but Valve has now fixed it. Keep in mind, though, that this option is only available when you're using the Steam Deck in Desktop Mode. You can learn more about how to enable Desktop Mode here.
There is also a fix related to Steam Input, which handles controller support. The update solves a problem that affected the Lenovo Legion Go S when playing certain games, such as Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered. Some button symbols, also called glyphs, were missing when using Steam Input API games with the TranslateOrigin function. This issue has now been fixed, which should make controller layouts display correctly on the third-party SteamOS device.
