After the massive success of Black Myth: Wukong, Nvidia released Game Ready Drivers for the game alongside Star Wars Outlaws. However, in their post, there was something you may find peculiar. The RTX 4070 is getting a downgrade because they are introducing units with GDDR6 memory instead of faster GDDR6X.
We’ve been following the progress of these RTX 4070 graphics cards with downgraded GDDR6 since they were first rumored, and now Nvidia has finally made reference to them. While we don’t have our hands on one ourselves, we have reviewed the original RTX 4070, and the GDDR6 version should remain pretty much the same.
GDDR6 RTX 4070s offer “similar performance”
We’ve already got our first look at the GDDR6 4070 GPUs from Manli. Nvidia claims that the reason for making these units was “To improve supply and availability to meet strong demand,” and they claim it offers “similar performance in games and applications”. It has the same 5,888 CUDA cores, 200W TDP, and 12GB of RAM, but moving away from the GDDR6X memory, it has clocked 1 Gbps lower at 20 Gbps instead of 21 Gbps.
That said, Manli has three 4070 GDDR6 GPUs ready to go. There are two dual fans and one triple fan variant. While there are no special names for these units, they are coded on the website, and the packaging mentions “12GB GDDR6”. This is a positive change following reports that the packaging may not be so clear, but it’s not a guarantee as Nvidia doesn’t mandate this.
So, we’re not entirely sure how well these units will be received or how much they’ll differ in price, but if it isn’t a huge amount, then there’d be no reason for the consumer base to opt for a slower version of the base model when a faster one is available with a slight price hike. Manli also introduced a Black Myth: Wukong-themed RTX 4070 Super GPU, but that is listed on their website as “China Only.”
