New Portal RTX update tries to make sure you don’t run out of VRAM

Table of Contents
Portal with RTX just got a major update, now upgraded with Nvidia's latest DLSS 4, featuring Multi-Frame Generation technology for RTX 50 series GPUs. It also includes the new transformer-based model for ray reconstruction and DLAA, introduces RTX Neural Radiance Cache (NRC) to improve indirect lighting, and a host of other performance optimizations.
This makes the iconic first-person platformer the latest title to adopt Team Green's newest version of its AI-powered tech. DLSS 4 originally launched with support for 75 games and apps, and Nvidia says it has hit the 125-game milestone two years faster than DLSS 3 did.
Optimized VRAM usage
One of the key highlights is the addition of a new “texture streaming system” that optimizes VRAM usage to maximize texture quality within the available video memory budget. This is especially helpful for those on 8GB GPUs, which have recently been dubbed obsolete by reviewers due to their inadequate performance in modern AAA titles like The Last of Us Part II Remastered and DOOM: The Dark Ages.
However, this update should give those with lower VRAM a chance to enjoy all the realistic lighting and features without having to worry about memory issues like owners of the new RTX 5060 8GB. The update also brings various performance improvements and memory usage optimizations, and thanks to optimized RTX Remix shader compilation, compiling shaders should now be a lot quicker as well.

- Made various performance improvements and memory usage optimizations
- Changed the behavior of default graphical presets.
- Optimized RTX Remix's shader compilation process, reducing shader compilation time. Also added an on screen notification when shaders are actively being compiled.
- Updated NVIDIA Real-time Denoising (NRD) library to 4.13 for better performance, as well as sharper and more stable denoising
Portal with RTX is a free DLC for the original Portal game that lets fans experience the classic puzzle title with full ray tracing and now, DLSS 4. While the DLC hasn’t received overwhelmingly positive reviews due to its heavy system requirements compared to the original, this update might help ease some of that criticism by improving performance. Portal with RTX is available for free on Steam, exclusively for those who own the original Portal.
