A new Proton Experimental update was released a few days ago, and it brings several important improvements for Steam Deck users. This update focuses on fixing long wait times, improving video playback, and solving a handful of audio and stutter issues across many games. The loading times fix targets games published by Xbox Game Studios in particular.

Before this update, games like Avowed, Grounded 2, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and The Outer Worlds 2 had extremely long wait times every time you launched them. Some players even thought the games were frozen because the loading screens took so long. With the latest update, these delays are now gone. These titles should launch much faster, making the experience smoother on the Steam Deck.

What does the update offer?

  • Now playable: Metal Slug: Awakening, The Obsessive Shadow, Drop Dead: The Cabin, Lost Memories 3 Side Stories, Death by Scrolling, Stellar Reach.
  • Fixed audio playback in Rocket Jockey.
  • Fixed Crystal of Atlan crashing on dekstops.
  • Fixed Rocket Jockey not being playable on some installation.
  • Fixed mouse cursor wrapping issues for Hell Yeah!, CastleMiner Z Eterium, Blood and Bacon.
  • Fixed Arc Raiders stutter when changing game settings on some system.
  • Fixed long wait on every launch of many Xbox Game Studios games including Avowed, Grounded 2, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and The Outer Worlds 2.
  • Fixed video playback in Conquer the World.
  • Fixed video playback in Okayunyumu!.
  • Fixed glitchy video playback in Satisfactory.
  • Fixed 7.1 audio channel mapping in Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’S CUT, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and potentially many other games.
  • Fixed Proton 10 regressions:
    • Killer Instinct should no longer crash at the end of match.
    • Steam Workshop integration in The Conquest of Go should work again.

The new update also fixes video playback in Conquer the World, Okayunyumu!, and removes glitchy visuals in Satisfactory, which has been a long-standing issue for its Steam Deck players. The update also brings several audio fixes, such as correcting audio issues in Rocket Jockey. Proper 7.1 audio channel mapping in games like Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has also been added.

Another important fix is for ARC Raiders, which suffered from stuttering whenever players changed in-game settings. However, that issue has now been solved, and the game should run smoothly on the Steam Deck for everyone.

On top of this, the update adds a long list of newly playable games, including Metal Slug: Awakening, The Obsessive Shadow, Drop Dead: The Cabin, Lost Memories 3 Side Stories, Death by Scrolling, and Stellar Reach.

There are also a few regression fixes. For example, Killer Instinct no longer crashes at the end of a match, and Steam Workshop integration works again in The Conquest of Go. Overall, this Proton Experimental update delivers meaningful improvements that Steam Deck users will feel right away. It should update automatically – if you don’t have Proton Experimental, you can search for it in the Steam store.
