The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the go-to for many for high-end gaming PC builds. It has 8 cores and 16 threads, which makes it decent for more multitasking, even though that’s not its target area of performance. Where it really shines is with its very high boost clock speed of 5.2GHz, and enormous 96MB L3 cache. This cache is unique as it’s stacked to allow for more data to be stored, but also for quicker access by the CPU. AMD’s 3D V-cache is what makes the entire X3D lineup so good for gaming performance, as it drastically reduces frame latency, which makes for a much smoother experience.

A high-performance CPU needs a capable cooler, and this MSI MAG Coreliquid A13 is a great option for the 9800X3D. In terms of design, it’s more minimalist, but it still features a nice touch of aRGB lighting that can be customized via MSI Center. As with most top-tier coolers, it uses Rifle bearings on the fans, which are designed to extend lifespan and dramatically reduce operating noise levels. Its Ring Blade design focuses on airflow and also reduces noise, and there’s EPDM tubing, which helps to prevent coolant evaporation.

Considerations before you buy

Before getting this CPU and cooler combo, it’s worth factoring in what type of build you want to make and its primary usage. While the 9800X3D is amazing for gaming, it can fall short when it comes to multitasking and AI-accelerated tasks when compared to some of the Intel Core Ultra lineup. Intel’s offerings have dedicated NPUs and much higher core and thread counts, which make them excellent for productivity, but they have much smaller L3 caches, making them less ideal for gaming. If you’re a content creator, you may find some of the Core Ultra CPUs better suited, but for all-out gaming performance, you really can’t beat the 9800X3D for the price.
