Newer PlayStation 5 Slim models could lose the extra disk space it got compared to the original PS5, says rumor

It was a couple of weeks ago when Sony raised its PlayStation 5 prices in the U.S., affecting the Standard, Digital Edition, and latest PS5 Pro model. One variant that escaped the effect of tariffs was the PS5 Slim, but a new rumor says the slimline model isn’t getting off scot-free. A refreshed version of the model is losing one of its selling points, as storage size could be cut back.
One of the benefits of the PS5 Slim was that it improved the onboard storage, bringing it up from 825GB on the original model to 1TB on the Slim, netting gamers a little extra breathing room when they start running out of space. Now, the rumor suggests a revised version of the slim is being reverted back to 825GB, at least for the Digital Edition model.
PS5 Slim Digital Edition is losing some of its disk space
This rumor comes from a prominent leaker by the name of billbil-kun, who points out certification documents sourced from June 2025, which reveal plans for a new CFI-2100 (Chassis E) model. This is said to be a newer revision of the original CFI-2000 (Chassis D) PS5 Slim Digital Edition console. The documents could point towards ‘minor’ adjustments to the hardware, while maintaining the same price point.

The rising price of PlayStation consoles in the U.S. recently (Sony already raised the prices elsewhere in April) is frustrating if you’re yet to upgrade to the PS5, especially since past generations would have had a price drop by now – it has already been nearly five years since the PlayStation 5 launched. The possibility of reduced storage size might be a compromise Sony will settle for to keep the Slim’s original price tag.
According to the leaker, the newer Chassis E model will start shipping on September 13 in Europe – no other region is mentioned in the report. The good news is that the standard PS5 Slim that comes with a disc drive will also be based on the Chassis E revision, but will reportedly still retain its 1TB SSD. But if you were planning on buying the Digital Edition, it might be a good time to grab one before the newer revision potentially cuts the storage space.
