A long-awaited handheld sequel, the Nintendo Switch 2, has been a hot topic in the gaming community, and the latest leak has lifted anticipation even more. It seems that the next iteration of the Nintendo Switch will feature a “new” Nvidia chip which we think will enable Switch 2 to (potentially) have DLSS support, meaning even better gaming performance and a much-appreciated boost for the handheld.

We’ve already seen how AMD’s AFMF 2 makes integrated graphics viable for gaming, and the Switch 2 could benefit from similar tech. While there has been no official word from Nintendo about the Switch 2’s release date, there is speculation that it might drop in Q1 2025, or at least be announced within that timeframe.

DLSS support for Nintendo Switch 2 a possibility?

According to a post on Reddit by u/MHN1994, the motherboard of the Switch 2 has been leaked, and it clearly shows an Nvidia processor along with SK Hynix memory (H58GE6AK8B). This is an LPDDR5X memory with a maximum of 12GB.

In addition, this Nvidia chipset is rumored to be based on the Ampere architecture, which is a huge jump from the Maxwell architecture of the Switch we currently have. While this isn’t the latest architecture, it should provide much better gaming performance. Since the RTX 3000 series GPUs can use DLSS, even powering through more demanding titles should be possible with the Nintendo Switch 2.

By utilizing the upscaling technology, the Switch 2 can enjoy improved performance without a hit to graphical fidelity. Upscaling is a technique that runs the game at a lower native resolution for a smoother framerate, then upscales it using AI to bring the visuals up to scratch. The addition of frame generation, however, seems unlikely, as this is currently locked behind DLSS 3 with the RTX 40 series on Ada Lovelace architecture.

A huge testament to how well-built these GPUs were is that the RTX 3060 is still the best-selling GPU on Amazon US, and if these leaks are correct, Switch fans are in for a healthy upgrade. Another Reddit user, Icy-ConcentrationC, commented on this post, saying: “First pic of this post shows the backside of the circuit board, when mirrored, it seems to match up with this leak from awhile ago, wow it’s real,” and posted this picture.

So, all leaks point toward this being real, but as always, anything could change, and until there is official word from Nintendo, take everything with a pinch of salt.
