Nvidia’s new RTX 4070 has finally made its way to retailers but with a twist. Well, the RTX 4070 isn’t a new GPU by any means, but it recently saw some new SKUs launched with slower GDDR6 memory. This is a downgrade from the card’s usual GDDR6X, and despite the downgrade, the RTX 4070 with GDDR6 memory is being sold at the exact same price as its GDDR6X counterpart.

This revelation comes as a surprise to many enthusiasts who were waiting to see how the downgraded models would be priced. GDDR6X memory, with its higher bandwidth, is no doubt superior to GDDR6. However, Nvidia claims that there will be no noticeable difference in gaming performance between the two versions and it’s not yet evident what the true difference will be – we’ll have to wait for benchmarks first.

RTX 4070 with GDDR6 is priced the same on Newegg

One of the first retailers to list the RTX 4070 with GDDR6 memory is Newegg. The ASUS RTX 4070 GDDR6 is list on its store, albeit currently out of stock. The card is priced at $569.99, which is identical to the price of the GDDR6X versions (both white and black colorways at the time of writing):

It is important to note that this is not the first time Nvidia has released a graphics card with downgraded specifications. In the past, the company has often introduced lower-tier models with reduced core counts or slower clock speeds. However, these downgrades typically come with a corresponding price reduction.

It is clear that the downgrade is a blow to the value proposition of the RTX 4070. Given the competitive nature of the GPU market, it is reasonable to expect that consumers would be more inclined to choose a card with faster memory, especially if it is priced similarly. And on top of all that, it looks like there is hardly a difference in the Korean market either according to this post on X from harukaze5719.
