Nvidia is getting ready to release the RTX 5090D V2, a new high-end graphics card that will launch only in China. Several leaks and rumors appeared on the surface during the past few months regarding the card, but BenchLife now claims that the card will launch next month, on August 12.

This card is a follow-up to the original RTX 5090D, which was pulled from shelves a few months ago due to U.S. trade restrictions. There were hopes that the original model would make a return after the news that the previously-banned (also due to U.S. restrictions) H20 AI chip is being shipped to China again.

“The release date of the GeForce RTX 5090 D V2 with 24GB memory has been confirmed.”

What is the RTX 5090D V2?

The RTX 5090D V2 is a slightly toned-down version of the RTX 5090. It still uses the same powerful Blackwell GPU architecture, known by the chip name GB202-240. It packs 21,760 CUDA cores, which is the same as the standard RTX 5090 and the original 5090D.

Based on the expected specs, what makes it different from the original RTX 5090 is the memory. This new V2 version drops from 32GB to 24GB of GDDR7 VRAM. It also cuts the memory bus from 512-bit to 384-bit. This is a huge setback, considering the 5090 is known for its massive VRAM. Despite these cuts, the power draw remains the same. The RTX 5090D V2 will ship with a 575W TGP (Total Graphics Power), and board partners can even push it up to 600W if needed.

This isn’t the first time Nvidia has done this. The 4090D was released in China as a trimmed-down version of the RTX 4090. The reason? U.S. export laws. These rules limit how much AI performance can be included in products shipped to certain regions, and China is one of them.

Nvidia is yet to officially confirm the price of the 5090D V2. However, as the model offers 8GB less VRAM than the original 5090, we can perhaps expect a price drop. While it won’t be massive, it will be something that compensates for the lack of VRAM. Plus, those who already own the RTX 4090 might skip upgrading to the 5090D V2, as the flagship model of the previous series also offers 24GB of VRAM.
