Modders just shadowdropped something many retro fans never expected to see: a native PC version of the original Banjo-Kazooie, rebuilt from the ground up to run smoothly on modern systems. This isn’t a traditional emulator setup. Instead, the game has been recompiled using modern tools, allowing it to run directly on Windows, macOS, Linux, and even the Steam Deck.

Because the game runs natively, performance is far better than what most people are used to with emulation. Frame rates are fully uncapped, loading times are nearly instant, and input lag is noticeably lower. The game feels more responsive overall, while still keeping the same look and sound that fans remember from the Nintendo 64 version. Modernized controls are also available.

Visual upgrades are certainly some of the biggest highlights. The port supports any aspect ratio, including ultrawide monitors, without stretching the image or breaking effects. The HUD and screen transitions have been adjusted to work properly in widescreen, and players can choose to keep the HUD centered at 16:9 if they prefer a cleaner layout. High resolutions are supported, which makes environments and character models look sharper.

There’s also a dual-analog camera option that allows modern controller-style camera movement. However, classic control options are still available for anyone who wants the original feel.

Several quality-of-life features have been added, too. Notes can now be saved when leaving a level or after dying, but this option can be turned off if you want the authentic N64 experience. Audio has also been carefully preserved, with music and sound effects behaving exactly as they did in the original version.

Mod support is another major part of the project. Players can easily install texture packs, gameplay tweaks, and even brand-new content. High-resolution texture mods are already available, and larger projects, such as full custom campaigns, are in development. There are even plans to experiment with ray tracing using the same rendering technology behind the port.

To play, users must provide a North American 1.0 copy of the original game in the main menu. The project will automatically load assets from the copy you provide, so you won’t have to worry about going through any extra steps.
