Game creation tools are a lot of fun if you’re looking for something creative to sink your time into. However, not everything is so easy – we wouldn’t recommend throwing yourself into the deep end with something like Unreal Engine if you’re a newbie/hobbyist game developer for example.

Tools like GameMaker and RPG Maker are fantastic alternatives if you’re interested in creating a simple 2D game with a beginner-friendly user interface. Luckily for you, RPG Maker VX Ace is now free to keep on Steam. So, if you fancy trying it out, we recommend checking it out before this offer ends in less than a week’s time.

RPG Maker VX Ace is 100% off until February 10th

RPG Maker VX Ace is currently 100% off on Steam until February 10th, after which this offer will no longer be available. The Game will then return to its full price of $69.99. Just a quick glance at the tool’s SteamDB page will tell you there’s no reason to grab it at full price – it is regularly on sale for 90% off. However, this is the first time it has dropped to completely free on Steam.

For those unfamiliar with how RPG Maker works, it is a game development tool that is easy to pick up. It does a fair amount of the heavy lifting in terms of graphics if you want to stick to the default character portraits and sprites that ship with the software. That means you can focus your attention on story writing, scripting (via a user interface), and creating the world.

There’s a lot you can do with the software and it’s a good place to start learning the basics of game development. We recommend checking out the resources page on RPG Maker here for additional tilesets and sprites, as well as tutorials here to help you get started.

On top of that, there are tons of games made by the dedicated RPG Maker community which you can try out for yourself, if you’re interested in seeing what the engine is capable of.
