Sony’s decision to slash the price of the PlayStation VR 2 headset by a substantial $200 just a week before its highly anticipated PC compatibility launch is a strategic move that could significantly impact the VR market. Sony’s PSVR 2 has faced challenges since its release, including limited software support and a higher price point compared to competitors.

However, the combination of a reduced price and the promise of PC compatibility presents a compelling offer for consumers. PC support will be available via an official $60 adapter that launches on August 7th. This was first revealed back in early June, but now is more relevant than ever thanks to the current price cut, dropping the device down from $549.99 to $349.99.

PSVR 2 will soon be compatible with your PC

By making the PSVR 2 more accessible to a wider audience, Sony is not only attempting to boost sales but also positioning itself as a strong contender in the VR market. With the ability to connect the headset to PCs, Sony is tapping into a larger potential customer base and directly competing with established PC VR platforms.

While the headset’s future in terms of software support remains uncertain, the price reduction and upcoming PC compatibility could revitalize interest in the PSVR 2 and potentially attract new users to the PlayStation community. However, it’s important to note that the PC adapter for the PSVR 2 is an additional cost, which might deter some potential buyers. PC players will also miss out on some PS5-only features such as HDR, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback (excluding rumble).

As part of preparing PSVR2 for PC, Sony detailed the minimum PC requirements:

Operating systemWindows 10 64-bit / Windows 11 64-bit
ProcessorIntel Core i5-7600 / AMD Ryzen 3 3100
RAM8GB or higher
GPUNVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 or later
AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT or later
DisplayPortDisplayPort 1.4
USBDirect connection only
BluetoothBluetooth 4.0 or later

Keeping up with the competition

Additionally, the overall VR market is highly competitive, with other players like Meta and Valve offering their own VR solutions. Sony will need to continue investing in software development and content creation to ensure the long-term success of the PSVR 2, especially considering the recent news of reduced funding for VR games.
