Raspberry Pi has announced a new product called the Radio Module 2. It is their first standalone Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radio module, and it comes at a very low price of just $4. While small in size, the new module has everything needed to help product designers and RasPi hobbyists add wireless features to their projects. Great news for anyone who wants to build wireless devices without spending a lot of money or dealing with complicated certification processes.

What does the Radio Module 2 offer?

The Raspberry Pi Radio Module 2 uses the same Infineon chip found in the Raspberry Pi Pico W and Pico 2 W. This means that if you've already used one of those boards, you'll find it easy to work with the new module. It supports both Wi-Fi 4 (also known as 802.11n) and Bluetooth 5.2, including both Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth Low Energy.

This module is meant to work well with Raspberry Pi's RP2040 and RP2350 chips. It is very compact, measuring just 16.5mm by 14.5mm. It includes a built-in 2.4GHz antenna and only needs a few extra parts to function. You just need a power source and a host CPU, which helps reduce the overall cost when building devices in large numbers.

One of the best things about the Radio Module 2 is that it is fully certified. This means that companies and makers don't have to go through the expensive and complex radio certification process when adding it to their own products. Raspberry Pi has already done that work for you. This saves both time and money and makes it easier to bring wireless products to market.

Even though it's just been officially launched, the Radio Module 2 is already being used in real products. Two examples include SparkFun's Thing Plus – RP2350 and Pimoroni's Pico Plus 2 W. For those interested, you can buy the Radio Module 2 directly from Raspberry Pi’s website.
