Ray-traced Fallout New Vegas is one of our favorites to win some prize money in Nvidia’s RTX Remix mod contest

Nvidia has put together an RTX Remix mod contest with $50K of prize money up for grabs. The competition kicked off a couple of months ago, and now you can vote for your favorite entrants on ModDB. Some classic games (or levels from games) have been remixed with overhauled assets and ray tracing, including Unreal, Need For Speed: Underground (1 and 2), Call of Duty 2, and many more. However, what we want to talk about today is Fallout: New Vegas.
Many people place New Vegas as their number one Fallout game, and whether you agree or not, this mod is an impressive feat. Plus, it’s a game that could do with overhauled visuals – and shadows. Labeled ‘Mojave Wasteland RTX – A Complete Path-Traced Overhaul‘, this modification is created by a user named skurtyyskirts, who also entered several other projects, including a Bioshock RTX mod.

As the name suggests, this is an overhaul to the Mojave Wasteland region in Fallout: New Vegas and brings “full ray tracing, physically-based materials, and enhanced assets, all while honoring the original’s timeless, gritty aesthetic”. Its creator says it is a “complete remastering effort” to bring the graphics of the scorching desert region up to modern standards.
Development of the RTX Remix mod is in full production, with every asset being remade by hand – no AI textures or upscaling whatsoever, according to skurtyyskirts. The video above gives an excellent demonstration of what it’s all about. The same princples were applied to the Nvidia-promoted Half-Life 2 RTX demo that released a few months back.
The creator says if you vote for them, they’ll use the prize money for “a much-needed upgrade” to their toolset. Since the project is still early in development, it’s worth keeping track of its progress moving forward. The contest has four categories, which are as follows:
