Part of what makes handhelds such a fun device to own is not just the ability to take them anywhere and game on the go, but also the wide range of accessory mods you can experiment with. For the ASUS ROG Ally, we've seen these mods evolve, some enhance functionality by extending battery life, while others focus on customization, like turning your handheld into an ‘Ally DS‘. Another such mod we've come across brings some PlayStation-style controls to your ROG Ally.
It looks straight out of a PS3 controller
Essentially, this PlayStation-style D-pad mod lets you swap out the original ROG Ally D-pad for one inspired by the iconic PlayStation controller. While details are limited, judging by the look, we expect it to improve the tactile experience, especially for fighting games like Street Fighter, by offering more precise inputs compared to the stock D-pad. In fact, we spotted someone on Reddit vouching for it to help avoid double presses.
The mod was created by YesItsKira and is available for download on MakerWorld, a platform for 3D printing models. One noteworthy tip from the creator is to print the D-pad using resin for the best results. Resin prints offer a much smoother surface finish than traditional FDM, making them ideal for visible parts or components that benefit from a cleaner look.
That said, there's no official installation guide provided, so some technical know-how is required. For those familiar with disassembly, it should be a fairly straightforward process of replacing the original ROG Ally D-pad with this custom PlayStation-style alternative. While you are at you can also try customizing your ROG Ally with custom Hall Effect joysticks. YesItsKira also has an Xbox Elite-style version to check out while you’re here.
