Path of Exile 2 recently launched into early access and has been a regular in the Steam Charts top 5. It’s safe to say that the highly-anticipated sequel has already been a massive success, and thankfully it isn’t too difficult to run. Regardless, not all gaming PCs are the same and performance differs massively depending on your system. This is where advanced rendering techniques come in.
Frame generation is an AI-based graphics technology that generates entirely new frames; not too dissimilar to interpolation. With this, FPS in games can be boosted massively, though usually with downsides such as input delay. However, considering PoE2 isn’t a competitive FPS, the benefits of frame gen may outweigh the negatives in this case.
Path of Exile 2 frame generation mod
Going through the best settings for Path of Exile 2, you’ll notice that PoE2 has no native frame-gen implementation. You can use driver-level tools such as AMD’s AFMF 2, but this is exclusive to Radeon GPUs. So, alternatively, check out this mod that aims to boost performance substantially with FSR3 frame generation that will work with AMD, Nvidia, and Intel cards.
Uploaded as the very first mod for Path of Exile 2 on Nexus Mods, the ‘PoE 2 Frame Generation Mod‘ is free to download and functions via OptiScaler. Here’s the rundown on how to install the frame-gen software:
- Ensure you are running Path of Exile 2 in DirectX12
- Download the preset appropriate to your setup (Nvidia DLSS / AMD FSR3 / Intel XeSS) and unzip it
- Copy all files into your Path of Exile 2 game folder, next to the game .exe (right-click PoE 2 in your Steam library > Manage > Browse local files to locate the .exe file)
- Enable DLSS for RTX graphics cards / Enable XeSS for GTX, AMD, or Intel cards
- Open the OptiScaler hud by pressing ‘Insert’ and toggle frame generation on
Thanks to FSR 3 being open-source, this unlocks the potential for its frame-gen tech to be utilized in tandem with Nvidia and Intel’s DLSS and XeSS upscaling, respectively.
The mod’s creator, SildurFX, does issue a warning that modding in online games can lead to bans. OptiScaler works in a similar way to other graphics enhancement tools such as Reshade, so there is a risk of being banned if the game interprets the software as malicious. So far though, we haven’t seen anything to suggest this has happened yet.
