These four Capcom games are now playable on Steam Deck after ditching Games for Windows Live

Back in the day, Microsoft launched something called Games for Windows Live, also known as GFWL. This system was meant to help Windows PC games connect with Xbox Live, making things like multiplayer and achievements possible. But when GFWL was shut down, it left a lot of older games stuck. Many titles that used it could no longer be played properly, and some were even taken down from stores.
Capcom removes GFWL from four games
Now, things are finally starting to change. As spotted by Reddit user ThemosttrustedFries and X user Wario64, Capcom has taken the lead by removing GFWL from four of its older games. These titles include Lost Planet, Lost Planet 2, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, and Street Fighter X Tekken. This move has made the games playable again and much easier to enjoy, especially on handheld devices like the Steam Deck.
SteamDeckHQ was quick to test how these four games run on the Steam Deck. According to their testing, Lost Planet 1, Lost Planet 2, and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City have GFWL completely removed, making it much easier to play them. Street Fighter X Tekken, on the other hand, did have some trouble at first, as it got stuck during the installation script. However, the issue was fixed after a quick reboot and running it with Proton GE 10-3. It is also important to keep in mind that online features like multiplayer are completely gone, but you should be able to enjoy the single-player campaign of all four games.
SteamDeckHQ also noted that while these games are marked as Unsupported for the Steam Deck, they could be listed as Verified soon based on how well they run. All four were able to hit 60 FPS without any issues, but this is something you’d already expect from older games.
Unfortunately, for those who are interested in trying the games on their Steam Deck, only Lost Planet 1 is available for purchase on Steam for $14.99. As for the remaining three games, they were removed from the store due to GFWL issues. However, now that the issues have been sorted, we might expect them to return to Steam soon.
