A classic FPS game is getting a community upgrade to modern-day graphics. Well, I say community, it’s in fact seemingly one person working on a personal project to recreate their favorite game from 2002. Jos van Laar has reimagined Medal of Honor: Allied Assault by recreating the Scuttling the U-529 level.

The second level of the game is a stealth mission, infiltrating an enemy base to grab documents and destroy a prototype. But having come out on PC over 20 years ago, its graphics don’t live up to today’s standards. That was the motivation for Jos, who writes that the game is one of their favorites, with this mission in particular being an iconic one, so this creation is an homage to the work from the start of the century.

It even managed to grab the original level creator’s attention. Nathan Silvers says they are the developer behind the mission, having created it from the ground up with a different style of gameplay from the rest of the game. Also, it was one of the first missions they created was very happy to see it be recreated.

Impressive work for a recreation

Using Unreal Engine 5, the reimagining instantly gets the latest high-quality look that many modern games take advantage of. With thousands more polygons, everything looks all the more realistic once you look at how the original looks in comparison. Although it should not be a surprise, considering the creator, Jos, is a professional-level designer. Having a resumé filled with Crytek, Ubisoft, and more, it’s clear they are well-versed in creating even modern games.

Combining great skill and knowledge, the reimagined version of the game shows off the kind of work that can be done to preserve games and bring new audiences to them. However, being created by the community is a remarkable effort, given the work that has to be done, and yet it is always a wonder to see.

It is unlikely to be released, though. In the description, Jos notes “not sponsored, authorized, or endorsed in any way and is not intended for public release.” Considering the copyrights on the game, it probably wouldn’t end well coming out. Instead, we just have to settle for enjoying it on video.
