This Japanese retro firm is kickstarting a CRT-style monitor alongside its fourth X68000 remake

A Japanese company named Zuiki has been recreating retro computers for a few years now, as you can see from their Kibidango profile. But their latest entry is bringing even more nostalgia as it has decided to pair up its X68000 machine with a CRT-like monitor. The dedicated monitor comes a couple of months after its first successful campaign on remaking the X68000Z Super and XVI, giving another chance to back the computer and/or get the monitor as well.
Spoiler: it doesn’t actually utilize cathode ray tubes, but it does provide the fast response time and feel of gaming you might have enjoyed back in the day with these consoles. Instead, it’s an 8-inch 4:3 LCD paired with a curved acrylic panel to recreate that CRT feel and design.
Built at this smaller size, it’s made to fit alongside one of their X68000 Z2 machines, so it might be a bit too small for normal use. It also suggests a weight of 1500g, which is seemingly rather heavy for the small panel, so we can only think that might change with time, as the specs haven’t been finalized.
The X68000Z2
The original crowdfunding for the Z Super and Z XVI was a success. These were originally released by Sharp in 1991 as a home computer only in Japan. These used Motorola CPUs and had graphics systems similar to arcade games. Along with stereo sound, they made them into impressive video game machines in their time.
These machines have a very interesting design, and a rounded and angular shape, which is more like a briefcase with a handle rather than a PC. Zuiki is bringing those back in dimensions of 226 x 97 x 169 mm (HxWxD) alongside ARM CPUs, which is a fun and cool way to bring them back into the current generation.

The crowdfunding for the Z Super and XVI is also available on IndieGoGo for availability outside of Japan, but the goal is still over halfway away with just 15 days left, so it’s hard to say whether it will succeed. Plus, its CRT monitor is not an option here; that’s only on kibidango, and is 54% done with 13 days left at the time of writing.
