Total War Warhammer 40K will support modding “from launch” say devs, but official mod tools will have to wait

Total War fans have something big to look forward to, as Creative Assembly has officially revealed Total War: Warhammer 40,000, and it marks a huge change for the long-running strategy series. For the first time, Total War is moving away from historical battles and into the sci-fi far future. The game was revealed during The Game Awards, and it instantly grabbed attention.
The trailer showed massive armies, large-scale destruction, and the dark tone Warhammer 40K is known for. Actor David Harbour also appeared in the reveal and will play a mysterious character in the game. While there is still a lot we don’t know, Creative Assembly has already shared one important detail that many PC players care about: Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will support modding from launch. Or, at the very least, the devs say they intend to support it.

Modding has always been a major part of the Total War community. Players use mods to add new factions, rebalance gameplay, improve visuals, and even create full custom campaigns. According to the official FAQ, Creative Assembly plans to support modding through the Steam Workshop right from day one. This means players will be able to download and use mods easily without extra steps.
There is one thing to keep in mind, though. The game uses a new engine called Warcore, and because of that, the full official modding tools will not be available at launch. Those tools will come later. Still, Creative Assembly has made it clear that modding support is a priority, and they will share more details closer to release.

Will the game allow modding?
Yes, our intent is to support modding on the Steam Workshop from launch. However, because of the new Warcore engine, the official modding tools will come at a later point. We’ll share more on how we plan to support close to launch.

The game itself looks to be shaping up well. Players will command armies across a massive galactic map instead of a single continent. You will capture planets, manage resources, upgrade fleets, and fight both in space and on the ground. Battles will still happen in real time, with large armies clashing across war-torn worlds.
At launch, four factions will be playable. These include Space Marines, Orks, Aeldari, and Astra Militarum. Each faction will play very differently and stay true to its lore. Space Marines will be small but powerful. Orks will rely on massive numbers. Aeldari will focus on speed and precision. Astra Militarum will bring tanks, soldiers, and heavy firepower.
Customization is also a big focus. Players can name armies, alter colors, and adjust playstyles. This level of freedom fits perfectly with modding and the Warhammer community as a whole, as the community will likely expand on these systems further.
