“Virtual telekinesis” Larian CEO Swen Vincke praises device that lets you play Baldur’s Gate 3 with your mind

You may have heard the recent news that the sixth human implanted with Neuralink’s Telepathy chip has been able to use it to play video games with his mind. The game shown in the viral demonstration was no other than Divinity: Original Sin 2, the game Larian Studios developed before they went on to create Baldur’s Gate 3.
And sticking with Larian, CEO Swen Vincke has responded to the news by pointing out that one company has already done something similar with BG3. MindSpeaker has shown off one of its co-founders playing Baldur’s Gate 3 by combining a built-in eye tracker with a wearable EEG (electroencephalogram), rather than an actual implant.

Baldur’s Gate 3 with MindSpeaker & MindClick
On the MindSpeaker website, the company’s namesake device is described as “a wearable brain-computer interface” and is conventionally designed to aid speech-impaired individuals, typically those who have lost their ability to speak. By combining AI and non-invasive Brain Computer Interfacing, the team aims to give users a chance to communicate. This functionality can be used to interact with a computer.
As far as the Baldur’s Gate 3 demonstration goes, you can see how it looks in the video below with the MindSpeaker hooked up to a laptop running the game and the wearable on the back of the player’s head. A built-in eye tracker controls the cursor movement, while clicks are performed via the wearable EEG.
Vincke says that it is “an even more amazing version” of the brain implant technology, presumably due to not requiring an invasive implant. He goes on to call it “Virtual telekinesis,” which is a fair enough assessment as far as we can tell. Whether the two forms of mind-controlled tech can be closely compared for a broader range of use cases is another question entirely.
Although this video was posted to YouTube in September of last year, it hasn’t gained much traction (it is unlisted, after all). With no other than Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke making reference to it, we suspect the guys over at MindSpeaker will be getting a little bit more attention.
