Why should you get this motherboard?
Just because a product is on sale doesn't mean you should get it, and it is always recommended to check the specifications, reviews, and performance of any product before you buy it. That said, in the case of this motherboard, we've tested it in-house for our ASUS Prime Z790-A review and it had excellent performance and efficiency. We went on to say that it offers “the best price to performance ratio of any Z790 on the market”.
This is an ATX motherboard with dimensions of 12 inches x 9.6 inches (30.5 cm x 24.4 cm), meaning if you're going for a low-profile build, this board won't fit inside your mini-ITX case.
However, a larger motherboard has benefits, such as more expansion slots. That said, the Prime Z790-A has four RAM slots with a total capacity of 128GB, with each DDR5 RAM stick running at 7,000 MHz, which is pretty high in the RAM performance hierarchy.
This should be more than enough for any level of gaming or professional work. Personally, I have 16GB of DDR4 RAM running at 2,133 or 3,600 MHz if I overclock it, and I haven't run into any performance issues in three years. And DDR5 is on a whole other level, so you can rest easy knowing you'll be getting excellent performance from your system.
It also features four M.2 slots, which come with heatsink covers to keep the temperature in check and avoid any thermal throttling. It also has a reinforced PCIe 5.0 slot for the GPU, which is great, seeing how heavy the modern graphic cards have become. In addition, the PCIe 5.0 slot, which has double the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0, should ensure that you're getting the best performance in gaming and other workloads such as rendering and editing.
There are also plenty of connectivity options, such as:
- 1 x DisplayPort
- 1 x HDMI
- 4 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A
- 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C
- 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A
- 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C
- 1 x 2.5G Ethernet
- 3 x audio jacks
So, all in all, this is an excellent motherboard that delivered solid value before, and now that it is on sale, it is even better. You can pair three generations of Intel processors with it. On top of that, getting this motherboard would make more sense than a $500 alternative, seeing as how the Intel Arrow Lake processors are just around the corner, meaning the end of the road for the LGA 1700 socket moving forward.
