Apple Pay finally comes to India, but most bank cards won’t work yet
Table of Contents
Apple Pay is Apple’s digital payment service, allowing users to make purchases with their Apple devices in place of a physical credit card. Credit cards can be added to an iPhone, Apple Watch, or iPad and then used to make secure payments in stores, apps, and online. After years of missing out, Apple Pay is now available in India, but it’s limited to select bank cards.
At the moment, Apple Pay supports eligible Visa and Mastercard credit cards issued by Axis Bank in India. Users with a supported card can open the Apple Wallet app on their iPhone, tap the plus icon, and follow the instructions to add their credit card. Once the card has been successfully added, it can be used through Apple Pay for supported purchases.
For customers, one of the biggest benefits is convenience. Instead of reaching for a physical credit card every time they want to pay at a store, they can use their iPhone or Apple Watch. Apple Pay can also be used for in-store purchases without an active internet or cellular connection, which makes it useful in situations where connectivity is poor or unavailable.

Apple Pay officially comes to India
The service can make online and in-app purchases more convenient as well. Rather than repeatedly entering card information during checkout, users can pay with a card already stored on their Apple device wherever Apple Pay is supported.
Merchants can also benefit from the launch. Businesses that support compatible contactless payments can give iPhone and Apple Watch owners another payment option at checkout, while apps and websites can integrate Apple Pay to provide customers with a quicker way to complete purchases.
The biggest limitation right now is the small number of supported cards. With only eligible Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards supported at launch, many Apple users in India won’t be able to use the service immediately. This includes RuPay (India’s domestic network), while Axis Bank is the country’s fourth-largest credit card issuer.
