Clearly, spending $2,000 on a CPU is a huge investment. But the 9970X offers a good balance of power and cost compared to its stablemates. Its beastly, bigger sibling, the 9980X, has an MSRP of $5,000, which is more than double this deal price. In more niche use cases, that power can be required regularly, but the performance-to-cost ratio of the 9970X is better, particularly if you don’t need eye-watering performance all the time for your workstation.

Despite the Threadripper 9970X having half the cores and threads of the 9980X, reviewers report that it can sometimes match its more potent sibling. That wouldn’t be in tasks that require heavy multi-thread-focused performance, where the 9980X and its 128 threads are clearly king. The Threadripper 9970X doesn’t live on Socket AM5. The platform is AMD’s sTR5, which is a true workstation-oriented platform. Not only does it afford you Threadripper power, but the whole ecosystem is HEDT (high-end desktop) focused. Larger memory capacity, more PCIe lanes, and motherboard features that simply aren’t present on the desktop-focused Socket AM5.
What to consider before you buy
The Threadripper 9970X isn’t a desktop processor. It’s a serious, well-balanced workstation CPU that offers real value and next-level performance for coding, scientific needs, professional-level editing, rendering, and demanding multi-threaded applications.
Additionally, although it can be used to game on, that really isn’t what this CPU is for. In fact, gaming performance isn’t a positive point for the 9970X. If you’re keen on a powerful system where gaming is a focus, the AMD Ryzen 9950X3D or 9950X3D2 would be better options.
