That good old 3D V-Cache performance
Like the Ryzen 7 5800X3D before it, the 7800X3D entered the world as a supercharged gaming-focused processor thanks to its 3D V-Cache. As we pointed out in our hands-on review, the technology enables the processor to outperform higher-spec CPUs in gaming and single-core performance. In part, that’s because of its 96MB L3 cache, which can store frequently accessed game data directly on the processor for easy access.
Generationally superior to the 5800X3D
The 7800X3D is the direct successor to the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, and it’s more than just a better gaming CPU than its predecessor. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D features two CCDs (Core Complex Dies), compared to just one on the 5800X3D. This is useful because the one CCD with X3D cache installed (on the 5800X3D) limited its performance outside of gaming. The 7800X3D has two CCDs, and only one has X3D cache installed. So the 7800X3D can better stretch its legs outside of gaming.

The Ryzen 9 9900X3D is one option; the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9950X3D2 are two more, albeit high-end desktop options with huge non-gaming performance. You’ll also have the next-generation Olympic Ridge Zen 6 processors to consider. So you’re not short on any paths forward.
What to consider before you buy
The obvious note about the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is that the better gaming-focused option is the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The newer 9000-Series part is a better all-around performer. However, it’s also $100 more expensive, which makes this deal a great option if value is key for a first vault onto the AM5 platform.
