How much of a discount is good for a processor? That depends, but we do know that this deal on the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is one PC gamers should consider. With the Ryzen 7 9800X3D currently $449 on Amazon, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is now $349. That’s $100 less for the older processor. But if you’re looking for the best midrange gaming CPU for your money, it’s definitely a solid option. This iconic X3D CPU keeps on going, and with deals like this, it’s easy to see why.
Why we like the Ryzen 7 7800X3D
That good old 3D V-Cache performance
Like the Ryzen 7 5800X3D before it, the 7800X3D entered the world as a supercharged gaming-focused processor thanks to its 3D V-Cache. As we pointed out in our hands-on review, the technology enables the processor to outperform higher-spec CPUs in gaming and single-core performance. In part, that’s because of its 96MB L3 cache, which can store frequently accessed game data directly on the processor for easy access.
Generationally superior to the 5800X3D
The 7800X3D is the direct successor to the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, and it’s more than just a better gaming CPU than its predecessor. It outperforms the Zen 3 part thanks to its more mature Zen 4 architecture, delivering better productivity alongside its gaming credentials.

A decent starting point for Socket AM5
If you’re coming to the AM5 platform and the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is your first stop, you’re in a strong position. You may not feel it’s worth ever moving to the 9800X3D, but there are other options. The Ryzen 9 9900X3D is one option; the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9950X3D2 are two more, albeit high-end desktop options with huge non-gaming performance. You’ll also have the next-generation Olympic Ridge Zen 6 processors to consider. So you’re not short on any paths forward.
What to consider before you buy
The obvious note about the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is that the better gaming-focused option is the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The newer 9000-Series part is a better all-around performer. However, it’s also $100 more expensive, which makes this deal a great option if value is key for a first vault onto the AM5 platform. If the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is too expensive, then the Ryzen 5 7600X3D is worth checking out, as it’s almost as good for gaming. Otherwise, the best CPUs for gaming is a worthy read.
