AMD’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D has remained at a low price on Amazon for most of the month so far, as the retailer seems intent on selling stock of the 7000-Series favorite. But if you’ve yet to see it, the discounted price is a real difference-maker when comparing it against its successor. That’s because the 7800X3D is still priced at $334 at the retailer, approximately $30 under the average Amazon price, and a significant $80 cheaper than the newer Ryzen 7 9800X3D.

Why we love the Ryzen 7 7800X3D

An AMD 7000 Series legend

If you’re looking to start your Socket AM5 journey, the 7800X3D is an easy recommendation for gamers. It stands above and beyond its siblings for pure game performance, and although it’s been succeeded, the deal price claws back the value. Read our hands-on 7800X3D review to understand why.

Socket AM5

The main benefit of installing a 7000-Series CPU is that a longer Socket AM5 road remains open to you. With the latest 9000-Series CPUs, there are several potential upgrade options beyond this processor – and there may be even more if AMD confirms the next-generation of parts is also AM5.

Decent productivity

Although not the best option for productivity, the 7800X3D is a better processor for daily tasks than its forbearer, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. This 8-core, 16-thread processor will still be a solid option for a gaming-focused PC that also needs to handle daily general computing.

What to consider before you buy

The performance elephant in the room is the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, the best CPU for gaming, and the successor to the 7800X3D. It’s an all-round improvement on its predecessor, too. However, it’s also $80 more expensive, so if every dollar matters, then the sustained discount Amazon has on the 7800X3D makes a lot more sense. Of course, if you’re looking for a more balanced processor, you could look at the Ryzen 7 7700X or Ryzen 9 9700X, depending on the prices. But be sure you’re keen on the CPU you pick.
