What we like about the AMD Ryzen 5 5500

The AMD Ryzen 5 5500 was released back in 2022 and is seen as a good option for gaming and multi-tasking that won’t break the bank. Coming in at $74.00, it’s much more affordable than the likes of the Ryzen 5 5600XT or Ryzen 5 9600X for instance, but still manages to have a decent amount of cores and threads, plus a reasonably good boost clock too.

It’s a budget-pick though, so comparing it to later releases or the likes of the top Ryzen CPUs such as the Ryzen 7 9800X3D isn’t really needed here. This is a CPU that can sit nicely at the core of low-cost build, and still deliver what you need until you decide to upgrade within the AM4 platform.

Core specs: This has 6 cores, 12 threads, a 4.2 GHz Max Boost, and 19 MB cache.
AM4 platform: This platform is still alive and well, and offers loads of options for cost-effective components too.
Good for 1080p gaming: Works well with lower-end graphics cards, like an RTX 3060 Ti, allowing for FHD gaming at higher settings.
Smaller L3 cache: It’s worth noting that the cache is on the smaller side, so we’d recommend going for something bigger for more demanding games.

Who’s this deal for?

Coming in at $74.00, this a CPU that’s ideal if you’re sticking to a budget and want to keep costs down on your AM4 build. And as you can see by the above graph (via camelcamelcamel), it’s also the best time to buy it on Amazon too.

There are other alternatives you may want to consider if you’re planning on upping your budget to above $100, that will still allow for you to save on surrounding components, but will likely perform better in both gaming and multi-threaded performance. I’d say the AMD Ryzen 7 5700X would be a good call, as it boasts 8 cores, 16 threads, a 4.6 GHz Max Boost, and a much larger 36 MB cache. That’s also on sale too, coming in at $139.00 at the time of writing.

But if you’re looking for something super-affordable that will get the job done, then this Ryzen 5 5500 deal is the one for you.
