If you already own a Sonos soundbar but want a bit more oomph to your home-cinema setup, this mighty subwoofer is the pick for you. The Sonos Sub 4 is a premium wireless subwoofer with opposing 5 x 8-inch woofers a, ported enclosure and 25Hz low-frequency extension, which make it particularly well suited to movies, electronic music and larger rooms. It should be noted that this is meant for integration into a Sonos system (i.e. with a Sonos Arc, Sonos Beam 2, or Sonos Era 300) so it lacks a conventional LFE input and cannot be used as a universal subwoofer with ordinary receivers or non-Sonos speakers. If you want something a bit more compact, the Sonos Mini Sub is also on offer this Prime Day for $100 less, but if you want something truly epic, we recommend you grab this Sonos Sub 4 now for $150 off the MSRP while this offer is still live!
Sonos Sub 4
As the name would suggest, this Sonos Sub 4 is the fourth generation of Sonos’s full-size wireless subwoofer. It retains the distinctive rectangular enclosure and central acoustic opening of its predecessors while adding updated processing hardware, more memory, Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, reduced idle power consumption and a matte rather than glossy finish. Read below for more information on the various specifications, or see the foot of this page for some alternative Prime Day speaker deals.
What we like about the Sonos Sub 4 wireless subwoofer
Deep extension down to 25Hz
Sonos rates the Sub 4 to reach as low as 25Hz. Frequencies in this region are often felt as physical pressure and vibration rather than heard solely as a distinct musical note. This extension helps reproduce cinematic effects such as explosions, engines and thunder with greater weight. It also benefits music containing synthesized sub-bass, pipe-organ fundamentals or low electronic percussion.

Actual in-room response depends on placement, room dimensions, listening position and construction. Walls and corners can reinforce bass, while room modes can create strong peaks or deep cancellations at particular seats. The 25Hz figure should therefore be treated as the hardware’s claimed lower limit rather than a guarantee of perfectly even bass in every room.
Force-cancelling dual woofers
The two elliptical woofers face inward across the central opening. When one driver moves in one direction, the other produces an opposing mechanical force. This arrangement allows the cabinet to remain comparatively stable at high output levels. Less physical vibration means fewer unwanted noises from the enclosure itself and less energy transferred into nearby furniture.
Force cancellation does not prevent deep bass from travelling through floors and walls. In flats or shared homes, low frequencies may still disturb adjoining rooms even when the subwoofer cabinet feels stable. Reducing the Sub Level setting or using Night Sound on a compatible Sonos soundbar may be necessary during quieter hours.
Improves clarity as well as bass
Adding Sub 4 does more than make low frequencies louder. Once paired, the Sonos system automatically adjusts its crossover and redirects demanding bass content away from the main speaker or soundbar. This allows the paired product’s smaller drivers to concentrate on midrange and high frequencies. Dialogue can become clearer, music may sound more open, and the system can maintain composure at higher volumes.
The improvement is likely to be particularly noticeable with compact products such as Beam or Era 100. Larger speakers such as Five and Era 300 already produce capable bass, but Sub 4 can extend the system lower and reduce the workload placed on their internal woofers.
Strong home-theater compatibility
Sub 4 can accompany Arc Ultra, Arc, Beam, Beam (Gen 2) and Ray. The soundbar connects to the television and processes the soundtrack, while the subwoofer receives its bass channel through the Sonos network. A compatible Sonos soundbar, Sub 4 and pair of rear speakers can create a more immersive home-theater system without the speaker wiring and AV receiver required by a conventional component setup. The only cable needed by the Sub 4 itself is its mains lead. It is important to distinguish wireless audio from wireless power. The subwoofer still requires a nearby electrical outlet, and it should remain in the same Sonos room as the product to which it is bonded.
Note the Sub 4 is not compatible with the older Playbar or Playbase. Those products can use earlier Sub generations, but not this model.
Dual-subwoofer expansion
Compatible Sonos home-theater products can operate with two subwoofers. Arc Ultra and the newer Beam Ultra support two Sub 4 units, two Sub (Gen 3) units or one of each.
Arc, the first- and second-generation Beam, Ray and Sonos Amp can also support two subwoofers under specified combinations. Sub 4 can be paired with another Sub 4 or a Sub (Gen 3) in these systems. Running two units can provide more headroom and, when positioned effectively, more consistent bass across several seats. It is not simply about doubling volume; two locations can help reduce the severe peaks and nulls caused by room acoustics.
A dual-sub configuration is expensive and unnecessary for many living rooms. One Sub 4 should already provide substantial output, while two are more relevant to large rooms, high playback levels or listeners seeking smoother coverage across a wide seating area.
Trueplay room tuning
Trueplay measures the room’s acoustic response and adjusts the Sonos system accordingly. With a subwoofer installed, this process can help integrate the bass with the soundbar or speakers and reduce an excessively boomy or disconnected presentation. The Sonos app also provides direct Sub Level adjustment and a 0- or 180-degree phase control. Phase can be useful when bass seems weak around the main listening position because the subwoofer and main speakers are partially cancelling each other.
Trueplay sets phase automatically, so manual phase adjustment becomes unavailable while an existing Trueplay calibration is active. Room correction can improve integration, but careful physical placement remains worthwhile because software cannot fully repair a severe acoustic null.
Upright or horizontal placement
The Sub 4 can stand vertically or lie flat, providing more installation flexibility than a conventional cube-shaped subwoofer. Its enclosure measures approximately 15.31 inches high, 15.83 inches wide and 6.22 inches deep, with an official weight of 25.99 pounds. Horizontal positioning can allow it to fit beneath some sofas or other furniture. Adequate clearance must remain around the central opening, and nothing should be placed on top of the cabinet when it is lying down.
Bass frequencies are largely non-directional, so the subwoofer does not need to sit beside the television. Placement near a wall or corner may increase output but can also make particular frequencies sound uneven. Testing more than one location before running Trueplay is advisable.
Updated connectivity and efficiency
Sub 4 supports dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and connects to compatible 2.4GHz or 5GHz networks. It also includes a 10/100 Ethernet port for situations where a wired connection is preferable. Its updated quad-core processor and additional memory provide more headroom for future software support than earlier generations. These changes do not necessarily create a dramatic audible improvement over Sub (Gen 3), but they modernize the internal platform.
Sonos also claims up to 50% lower idle power consumption. This is relevant for a component that normally remains plugged in continuously, although real savings depend on how much time it spends idle and local electricity costs.
Who should consider this Sonos Sub 4 deal?
Sonos Sub 4 is best suited to owners of a compatible Sonos soundbar or mains-powered speaker who want materially deeper bass and greater system headroom. It is especially appropriate with Arc Ultra, Arc or Beam in a medium-to-large home theater.
Music listeners using Era 100, Era 300 or Five can also benefit from its lower extension and the reduced bass workload placed on their main speakers. Its strongest advantages will be heard with bass-heavy material and at moderate-to-high listening levels.
It is not suitable for a conventional AV receiver, powered monitors or speakers from another brand because there is no RCA, balanced or standard LFE input. Likewise, portable Sonos products such as Move and Roam cannot be bonded to it as the primary speaker.
