All in all there isn’t really anything negative to say about this laptop, other than the price, and this deal for $650 off the MSRP helps with that a lot!
ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2026)
The laptop includes a MUX switch and NVIDIA Advanced Optimus. The MUX allows the discrete GPU to send frames directly to the internal display, avoiding the integrated-graphics route and improving performance or latency in some games. Advanced Optimus can switch between the integrated and discrete graphics paths automatically, reducing the need for a manual reboot when changing modes. A 1080p infrared camera supports Windows Hello facial recognition. Audio features include Dolby Atmos, AI-assisted noise cancellation, an array microphone and a two-speaker system with Smart Amplifier technology. What we like about the ASUS ROG Strix G16 G615LW-AB96 gaming laptop
Full-power RTX 5080 graphics
The 175W RTX 5080 is the central reason to consider this configuration. At the display’s native 2560 x 1600 resolution, it should deliver strong results in modern games at high or maximum settings. Ray-traced titles may still benefit from DLSS upscaling and frame generation, but the underlying GPU is powerful enough to provide a much stronger foundation than mainstream RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 laptops.

The 16GB GDDR7 allocation is also important for longevity. It reduces the likelihood of texture-memory limitations at 1600p and provides useful capacity for Blender, CUDA rendering, video effects and other accelerated applications. It does not make the laptop equivalent to a professional workstation, but it gives creators more flexibility than gaming systems limited to 8GB.
A 240Hz 2.5K Nebula display
The 16-inch display uses a 2560 x 1600 resolution with a 16:10 aspect ratio. Its additional vertical space is helpful for documents, development tools and editing software, while its pixel density is high enough to produce a sharp image without imposing the same rendering load as a 4K panel.
The screen incorporates a Nebula HDR panel with Dolby Vision and up to 500 nits of brightness. It comes with a 3ms response time, 100% DCI-P3 coverage and Pantone validation. Those specifications make it suitable for gaming and general content creation, although users performing colour-critical commercial work should still calibrate the display.
ASUS states that the panel operates at 240Hz in Standard, Eco and Optimized GPU modes. Its full 300Hz setting becomes available when Ultimate GPU mode is selected through Armoury Crate. Ultimate mode prioritises performance by routing the display through the discrete GPU, but it also increases power consumption. A 300Hz refresh rate is most useful in esports titles where the RTX 5080 can generate exceptionally high frame rates. In graphically intensive single-player games, the visual quality, colour range and adaptive-sync behaviour will generally matter more than reaching 300 frames per second.
High-end processor performance
The Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus provides substantial single-thread and multicore capability. Its eight Performance cores are well suited to foreground gaming and lightly threaded applications, while the 16 Efficient cores provide additional throughput for rendering, encoding and background workloads.
This arrangement is particularly helpful for users who stream or record gameplay, work with large creative projects or run virtual machines. The processor is designed to consume significant power under sustained load, however, so its best performance will be available when connected to the supplied adapter and using an appropriate Armoury Crate profile.
Advanced cooling for sustained workloads
ASUS uses an end-to-end vapour chamber, three-fan cooling arrangement and Conductonaut Extreme liquid-metal thermal compound to manage the CPU and GPU. A vapour chamber can spread heat more evenly across a large surface than conventional isolated heat pipes, while the additional fan helps move air through the central portion of the chassis.
This cooling system is intended to maintain performance under sustained gaming or rendering rather than merely producing impressive short benchmark bursts. It will not make a 175W gaming laptop silent, and aggressive performance modes should be expected to generate substantial fan noise. Quieter profiles are available when maximum frame rates are unnecessary.
Tool-free access and upgradeable components
A sliding latch releases the lower panel without requiring a screwdriver. ASUS also uses a protective internal frame, allowing owners to reach the user-serviceable components while reducing the chance of accidentally touching more delicate hardware.
The laptop has two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots and supports up to 64GB. Its included 32GB of DDR5-5600 memory supports dual-channel operation and is sufficient for gaming, streaming and demanding everyday creative work. Users handling large video projects, virtual machines or unusually memory-intensive production workloads can replace the original modules later.
Two M.2 PCIe positions are provided, one of which contains the supplied 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. This makes it possible to add a second drive without removing the original one. ASUS notes that only single-sided M.2 SSDs are supported because of nearby motherboard components, so drive compatibility should be checked before upgrading.
Tool-free entry is also helpful for periodically cleaning the cooling fans. Gaming laptops can accumulate dust quickly, and maintaining clear airflow helps preserve both cooling performance and acceptable noise levels.
High-speed connectivity
The RTX 5080 configuration includes two Thunderbolt 5 ports supporting DisplayPort, Power Delivery and G-SYNC-compatible display output. Thunderbolt 5 offers extremely high bandwidth for compatible storage, docks and displays, with ASUS quoting transfer capability as high as 120Gbps in supported scenarios. External monitors can be connected through either Thunderbolt 5 port using DisplayPort-compatible USB-C cables or adapters. Buyers who specifically require a full-size HDMI socket should inspect the exact unit or confirm the port layout with the retailer before ordering.
Three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports provide up to 10Gbps connectivity for conventional peripherals. The system also includes a 3.5mm combination audio connection and 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, making it well suited to a permanent desk setup with wired networking.
Wi-Fi 7 provides tri-band wireless networking through a 2×2 radio, accompanied by Bluetooth 5.4. Full Wi-Fi 7 performance requires a compatible router, appropriate regional spectrum support and current drivers, but the laptop remains backward-compatible with older wireless networks.
Large battery, with realistic limitations
The integrated 90Wh battery is appropriately sized for a system of this class. Advanced Optimus, Eco mode and the processor’s integrated graphics can reduce consumption during lighter work, allowing the RTX 5080 to be disengaged when it is unnecessary. Nevertheless, the Core Ultra 9 HX processor, 16-inch high-refresh display and powerful GPU mean this should not be purchased primarily for battery endurance. Gaming on battery will reduce performance substantially and deplete the charge quickly. The RTX 5080 model also ships with a large 380W power adapter, which adds noticeable weight to an already substantial travel package.
Who should consider this RTX 5080 laptop deal?
The ASUS ROG Strix G16 G615LW-AB96 is best suited to enthusiasts who want near-desktop-class gaming performance in a system that can still be moved between locations. Its RTX 5080 is particularly appropriate for demanding 1600p gaming, ray tracing, VR, high-refresh-rate esports and GPU-accelerated creative applications.
It is also a strong option for game developers, 3D artists, video editors and engineering students who can benefit from the combination of a 24-core CPU, 16GB GPU, wide-gamut screen and upgradeable memory and storage. Thunderbolt 5 and 2.5Gb Ethernet further improve its usefulness as the centre of a workstation-style desk setup.
The laptop is less appropriate for users who regularly commute or need quiet, all-day unplugged operation. At approximately 5.84 pounds and as much as 1.21 inches thick, it is transportable rather than genuinely portable, and the 380W adapter increases the total carrying weight.
