Intel took a while to get up to speed with its Arrow Lake processors. However, the Core Ultra 5 Processor 250K Plus at least disrupts the lower end of AMD’s Socket AM5 families while offering a truly viable alternative for gaming and productivity. It’s a cost-friendly CPU putting a balanced alternative on the table against AMD’s less expensive options. And at $202, with an $18 saving, the latest Amazon deal makes it a more intriguing option.

Why we’d pick the Intel Core Ultra 5 Processor 250K Plus

A true value gaming CPU

While the best CPU for gaming remains the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, the Core Ultra 5 Processor 250K Plus is surprisingly good in modern titles; the surprising bit being that the processor is so good for around $200. Third-party testing has it outperforming the Core i7 14700K and the Ryzen 7 9700X. In fact, it (only) usually trails the Ryzen 5 7600X3D, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and the Ryzen 9 9800X3D. That’s impressive company.

Strong productivity performance for the price

Where the Core Ultra 5 Processor 250K Plus outperforms the X3D processors mentioned above is productivity; its 18-core structure is great for multi-threaded workloads, like editing, rendering, and compiling – particularly for the price. It won’t match the performance of, say, the Ryzen 9 9900X, but that CPU is usually over $100 more.

Inexpensive at the deal price

This CPU is designed as a disruptor in the lower end of the current-gen desktop market. And although we’ve mentioned this above, it’s worth re-stating that $202 is a fantastic price for the balanced performance available here. It really puts the cat among the AMD chickens, and is worth more than a single look if value is what you’re building for.

What to consider before you buy

As with all processors, there are caveats when value is a key component of any package. The key caveat here is that Arrow Lake processors will not have the lengthy ongoing support that AMD’s Socket AM5 processors will. Intel will shift to Nova Lake and a completely new socket in the near future, locking off the drop-in upgrade pool. Still, that’s not a now problem if you want a balanced gaming and productivity processor first and foremost.
