Micro Center’s Ryzen 5 5500 and Gigabyte B550M motherboard bundle offers an affordable AM4 entry point
Table of Contents
The Micro Center’s Ryzen 5 5500 and Gigabyte B550M DS3H AC R2 bundle offers a solid and affordable entry point into budget PC building with the AM4 platform. This is an older platform but is still alive and well, as AMD released the Ryzen 9 5900XT in 2024 and re-released the Ryzen 7 5800X3D this year. On top of that, you can save a lot of cost by skipping out on DDR5 RAM, as you’ll only need DDR4 RAM for this build.
That being said, while many will say that AM4 is a dead-end platform, you can still squeeze out a good couple of years with it, as I’m still on the same platform and have no issues in gaming and work. The jump to AM5 is very expensive, which adds more value, and it makes sense to stick to this platform as long as you can. These two components will only cost you $170.99, which is amazing.
- Don’t need DDR5
- Good value
- Decent options to upgrade to
- These aren’t heavy-duty components
- Path to upgrade stops at the Ryzen 9 5950X or the newer Ryzen 9 5900XT
Why you should check out this bundle
Ryzen 5 5500 offers decent performance
The Ryzen 5 5500 might not be the first choice, but there is no denying that it remains a capable processor for entry-level builds thanks to its 6 cores and 12 threads based on the Zen 3 architecture. It isn’t a heavy-hitting processor but packs a good enough punch for everyday use, modern gaming, and decent productivity. However, keep in mind that pushing heavy processing and multitasking will bring it down quickly, as it isn’t designed to handle that.
