MSI CROSSHAIR A16 HX (Ryzen 9 8940HX, RTX 5070)

MSI Crosshair A16 HX 16” 2.5K QHD+ 240Hz Gaming Laptop – AMD Ryzen 9 8940HX, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070, 32GB DDR5, 1TB NVMe SSD, Wi-Fi 6E, USB-C, Windows 11 Home: Gunmetal Grey E8WGK-009US

MSI OverBoost allows the CPU and GPU to use as much as 190W of combined power in the appropriate high-performance mode while connected to AC power. The laptop’s 240W adapter provides sufficient overhead for this configuration. Maximum gaming performance should be expected only when plugged in, as is the case with any gaming laptop. Read below for more details on the various specs, or take a look at the bottom of this page for more Prime Day gaming laptop deals.

What we like about this MSI Crosshair A16 HX E8WGK-009US gaming laptop

Strong 16-core Ryzen 9 performance

The AMD Ryzen 9 8940HX is one of the laptop’s defining advantages. Unlike hybrid processors that mix several classes of CPU core, it provides 16 Zen 4 cores with simultaneous multithreading across the entire chip. This makes it particularly effective when a workload can scale across numerous threads.

Its gaming performance should also be strong, especially in simulation, strategy and competitive titles that place substantial demands on the CPU. The powerful processor helps the RTX 5070 maintain high frame rates at reduced graphical settings, which is relevant when trying to exploit the 240Hz display.

NVIDIA Geforce RTX 5070 laptop GPU

A 115W power ceiling allows the RTX 5070 Laptop GPU to operate more freely than lower-wattage implementations found in thinner gaming notebooks. It should be capable of smooth 1600p gaming across a broad selection of titles, although the most demanding games will benefit from DLSS upscaling and frame generation. A discrete-graphics mode is available for situations where maximum performance and the lowest display latency matter more than power efficiency. Switching away from hybrid graphics can improve consistency in some games, though it also increases energy consumption and usually requires a restart or display-mode change.

The GPU is also useful outside gaming. NVIDIA Studio applications, CUDA-accelerated software, Blender, video encoders and AI tools can take advantage of its dedicated processing resources. The 8GB memory allocation means this remains a gaming and mainstream creative GPU rather than a mobile workstation for very large 3D scenes or local AI models.

QHD+ resolution and 240Hz refresh rate

The 16-inch IPS-level display has a 2560 x 1600 resolution and a productivity-friendly 16:10 aspect ratio. Its extra vertical space is useful for editing timelines, browsing code and working with documents, while the higher pixel density produces a noticeably sharper image than a conventional 1920 × 1200 gaming panel.

A 240Hz refresh rate provides exceptionally fluid motion when the GPU can generate sufficiently high frame rates. Competitive games such as shooters and racing titles are the most obvious beneficiaries, although ordinary desktop movement and scrolling also appear smoother.

MSI specifies typical coverage of 100% DCI-P3, making the screen much more suitable for creative work than inexpensive gaming panels with restricted colour gamuts. This does not automatically guarantee factory calibration or professional colour accuracy, but it gives photographers and video editors a stronger starting point.

Dual-channel memory with room to expand

The included 32GB is supplied as two 16GB DDR5-5200 modules, so the system operates in dual-channel mode from the outset. That is enough memory for modern gaming, content creation, development work and substantial multitasking without requiring an immediate upgrade. Both SO-DIMM slots are accessible, and MSI lists support for as much as 96GB. Reaching that maximum would require replacing the existing modules with two 48GB DIMMs, but the option gives the laptop considerably more longevity for virtualisation, large creative projects and professional workloads.

Two M.2 storage positions

A 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD is installed as standard. That provides reasonable initial capacity, although a modern game library can consume it quickly.

The internal layout includes one PCIe 4.0 M.2 position and another slot compatible with a PCIe 5.0 NVMe drive. This allows a second SSD to be added without removing the supplied 1TB drive. MSI also advertises very high SuperRAID transfer figures, but those require multiple suitable SSDs configured in RAID 0 and should not be interpreted as the speed of the factory-installed drive.

Capable cooling and power delivery

MSI’s Cooler Boost arrangement uses two fans, five heat pipes and four exhaust vents to manage the Ryzen 9 and RTX 5070. Phase-change thermal compound is used to improve contact with the processors as it warms, while avoiding the handling concerns associated with liquid metal.

The hardware is designed for sustained performance, but it will still produce audible fan noise during demanding games and rendering workloads. MSI cites gaming noise below 50dBA under its own test conditions, although actual results will vary with room temperature, firmware, performance mode and workload.

Extensive connectivity

The Crosshair provides three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports and two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports. Both Type-C connections support DisplayPort output and USB Power Delivery 3.0, giving the system considerably more flexibility than gaming laptops fitted with a single data-only USB-C socket.

USB-C charging can be useful while travelling, but it cannot replace the 240W adapter for maximum gaming performance. MSI supports compatible USB-C chargers up to 100W and notes that system performance may be reduced to remain within the available charging power.

An HDMI 2.1 connection supports displays as demanding as 4K at 120Hz or 8K at 60Hz. Gigabit Ethernet provides a stable wired gaming connection, while AMD’s RZ616 module supplies Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4. The inclusion of rear-mounted HDMI, Ethernet and power connections also helps keep permanent desk cables away from the sides.

Who should consider this 1600p gaming laptop deal?

The MSI Crosshair A16 HX E8WGK-009US is best suited to gamers who want strong 1600p performance, a 240Hz display and enough CPU power for high-frame-rate competitive games. It is also appropriate for students, developers and creators whose work benefits from 16 CPU cores, NVIDIA acceleration and a wide-gamut screen.

Its upgrade options make it particularly attractive to users who intend to keep the system for several years. Memory can be increased to 96GB, and the second M.2 position provides a straightforward route to significantly more storage.

This is less suitable for frequent travellers or anyone prioritising quiet operation and long unplugged endurance. MSI’s official specification lists an 80Wh battery and a weight of approximately 5.07 pounds before accounting for the sizeable 240W adapter. The Ryzen HX processor and high-power GPU can consume energy quickly under load, so the laptop is best understood as a transportable desktop replacement rather than an all-day ultraportable.
