Portable 2TB WD drive beats recent price hikes – drops back to a better place in latest Amazon deal
Table of Contents
We all know that 2026 has been the year of price hikes for anything remotely storage or memory-related. But if you still need a portable external drive, there is some good news. After more than a month at an inflated price, a new Amazon deal has discounted the popular WD 2TB Elements Portable. It’s a fairly compact drive with a list price of $165. But it is now down to $135, making it a much better pick, whether you’re a Windows or a Mac user.

Why we like the WD 2TB Elements Portable
USB 3.2 Gen 1 plug-and-play
The WD 2TB Elements Portable needs to be plugged into a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port. But it isn’t just for Windows PCs, as Mac users can reformat it and then use it without issue. Once done, you can expect straightforward data transfer speeds up to 150Mb/s – which is to be expected of this type of external drive.
Good storage for the cost
The actual drive inside the WD 2TB Elements Portable is a 5400rpm hard disk drive. Even so, in 2026, getting a spacious 2TB of portable storage for the deal price is good value (particularly when you can easily take it with you). That’s an amount of storage useful to have on hand for anything from documents and media files to disk images or other backups.

A relatively compact drive
HDD storage cannot be as slimline as SSD, but this 2TB Elements Portable is still relatively true to its portable name. It measures 8 inches (L) x 3 inches (W) x 6 inches (Th), and weighs 44g (1.58oz), so you can fit it inside a laptop bag or backpack without issue. Encased in a durable, resilient casing, owners report the drive as sturdy, reliable, useful, and fast!
What to consider before you buy
This WD 2TB drive should be a good pick for most file types and portable backup needs. It’s from an established name, is plug-and-play, and can be used with Windows and Mac systems (once reformatted). One task this drive isn’t cut out for, though, is storing or loading game files. There are better drives for that, WD’s own WD_BLACK P10 being one option, but if you’re looking for a reliable, quick, and well-priced 2TB external drive, you won’t go far wrong with this deal.
