Ryzen 5 9600X price drops in latest Amazon deal – a better time to buy after recent spike
Table of Contents
It feels churlish to call the Ryzen 5 9600X pricey when it nears $200. After all, this CPU launched with a $280 MSRP. However, as time ticks on, there is plenty of competition in the entry-level market. Plus, we know it can go lower. So, with the recent jump to $185 on Amazon now passed, the 9000-Series welcome party is back at a nicer price. Right now, the 9600X is $174, which is more than $100 below its MSRP. It’s also under its Amazon average price of $196, making it a good time to buy.

Why we’d pick the AMD Ryzen 5 9600X
A fast and effective gaming CPU
When you consider what the Ryzen 5 9600X is up against with other lower-cost gaming options, it’s well positioned. We consider it the best budget pick in our best CPUs for gaming list, and with good reason. It outpaces the Ryzen 5 7600X and the iconic Ryzen 7 5800X3D, and it’s cheaper than the 5800X3D, too. Below are the scores from our tests.
| Game | 9600X | 7600X | 5800X3D |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 325 FPS 1% 208 FPS | 295 FPS 1% 149 FPS | 279 FPS 1% 157 FPS |
| Day’s Gone | 246 FPS 1% 140 FPS | 236 FPS 1% 62 FPS | 283 FPS 1% 144 FPS |
Good for daily mixed use
The Ryzen 5 9600X is a 6-core, 12-thread CPU, but is a better productivity option than the 8-core, 16-thread Ryzen 7 5800X. That’s thanks to its generational performance uplift. We’re not saying upgrading from the 5800X to the 9600X makes sense, but if you’re weighing an AM4 upgrade against a new AM5 build, the 9600X will offer more performance on the new platform.

A first step on the AM5 highway
If you want to start your AM5 journey in a place with plenty of future upgrade options, the Ryzen 5 9600X makes a lot of sense. It’s current gen, it allows your PC to grow into a gaming or productivity focus in the future, and drop-in upgrade options will increase with the arrival of next-gen Olympic Ridge Zen 6 CPUs.
What to consider before you buy
The Ryzen 5 9600X is a good, balanced CPU for home users. However, if you have a Socket AM4 system, it may save you money to fully realise that platform’s performance potential before switching to a whole new one with AM5. Socket AM4 is still solid in 2026, but it depends on your upgrade priorities whether it makes sense to keep with it. Further, if you’re a gamer and want to focus on that specific area of performance, the Ryzen 5 7600X3D is also worth considering.
