The flexible 8-core, 16-thread processor may be AMD’s 9000-Series star, thanks to its ability to manage both gaming and non-gaming tasks admirably. Generationally superior and power-efficient
Not only does the 9700X outpace the 7700X in gaming, but it also does so across the board in single-core and multi-core tests. That may be expected, but it does so with a 40W lower TDP, at 65W. That makes it a highly efficient option for a midrange system that needs to handle games and more. You’ll certainly notice the step up if you’re shifting from a Socket AM4 chip like the Ryzen 7 5700X.

Socket AM5 upgrade joy
With the Ryzen 10000 Series confirmed to be supporting Socket AM5, the potential for future drop-in upgrades has increased. So while you may never need to upgrade to a more powerful processor, you’ll be able to, whether that’s to a 9950X3D (or 9950X3D2), or something as yet unreleased. AMD’s Socket AM5 continues to give future-facing potential, and that’s only a good thing.
What to consider before you buy
While the Ryzen 7 9700X has been cheaper before, the current deal is below Amazon’s average price and comes off the back of an early September mark of $339. That makes this deal worth considering if you’re building a midrange system now, especially considering it’s one of our best CPUs for gaming. Keep in mind that AMD’s X3D CPUs are a better pick if you’re focusing on gaming only. However, you can expect to pay over $400 for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which is a different cost bracket.
