AMD’s high-end processors are strong picks if you need a PC setup that is capable across the board. The Ryzen 9 9000 range starts with the Ryzen 9 9900X, a 12-core, 24-thread processor that pairs with top graphics cards and is known for its impressive productivity performance. The $500 CPU hasn’t been above $400 since April. But the latest deal has it even lower, at $335 from Amazon. That’s a lot of processor for a $165 discount.

Why we’d pick the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X

Excellent for productivity and content creation

The 12 cores and 24 threads of the 9900X make it a good pick if you work with tasks where multi-core grunt is useful. That could include rendering, compiling, or video editing. And while the 9900X isn’t one of our best CPUs for video editing, that’s largely because the 16-core, 32-thread Ryzen 9 9950X is more powerful. However, it’s also (as we write) $150 more expensive, and if it’s beyond your budget, the 9900X is a strong alternative.

Strong for gaming as well as work

While Ryzen 9 processors are for enthusiasts and users who need professional-level performance, they’re still reliable for gaming needs. You can easily pair the Ryzen 9 9900X with anything up to and including Nvidia’s RTX 5090, and have a high-powered system capable of handling any modern triple-A game. You wouldn’t buy the 9900X for gaming only, but that’s not to say it can’t handle itself.

Socket AM5 support through to 2029

AMD recently confirmed that its next-generation Zen 6 (Olympic Ridge) desktop processors will run on the Socket AM5 platform. With AM5 support running through to 2029, that only makes it a better decision to choose a Socket AM5 processor with more future upgrade paths now open. A Ryzen 10000 Series may offer viable drop-in upgrades if your needs outgrow the 9900X.

What to consider before you buy

As we mentioned above, if you’re picking the Ryzen 9 9900X for work and gaming, that choice should be a good one. However, if you’re looking for one of the best CPUs for gaming, then we’d recommend the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The 9800X3D is a gaming-focused processor that delivers exceptional performance for the latest titles, with less focus on the productivity performance the 9900X offers. However, given its prowess, it is also $100 more, so you will pay for its capabilities. For a more cost-conscious and less professional-grade CPU, consider the Ryzen 7 9700X.
