It’s a rare sight to see a processor find its record-low price for the first time. However, that’s what we’ve spotted at Amazon with AMD’s powerful Ryzen 9 9950X3D. The high-performance productivity and gaming processor has a steep list price of $699, reflecting its capabilities. However, you can now pick it up for $569, thanks to a hefty $130 (19%) Amazon discount. That’s the best deal on the processor so far, which may be excellent news if performance is what you need.

Why we love the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D

Top-tier productivity

The Ryzen 9 9950X3D doesn’t mess about in productivity. It’s a 16-core, 32-thread processor, and it uses all of that exceedingly well. The only processors that can beat it are itself (overclocked) or the slightly superior Ryzen 9 9950X3D2. So it’s pretty much the best consumer productivity processor you can buy, and the usual $699 list price is well-earned.

Nearly peerless gaming

There are two sides to this processor’s prowess. Its productivity performance is phenomenal, but so is its gaming performance thanks to AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology. It’s so good a gaming CPU that it ties for the crown with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D – our best CPU for gaming (value-wise). That makes it the best 16-core gaming CPU by a long way.

Overclockable

As if all of the above wasn’t enough, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D is also overclockable. So if you really want to crank up the performance, AMD’s PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) allows even more speed and capability. Doing so will void the warranty, but the option is available for enthusiasts who know what they’re doing.

What to consider before you buy

There are two obvious alternatives to the 9950X3D. The first is the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which matches the gaming performance of the pricier CPU but at $200-300 less. That’s the obvious choice if gaming is the main focus of your PC or CPU upgrade. The other alternative is the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2. The slightly better – and a lot more expensive – processor costs around $900. It absolutely is the best that AMD has to offer the consumer market. But whether the budget stretches that far only you will know.
