Samsung 990 1TB dips to new low at Amazon – a better price for a premium pick
Table of Contents
When browsing NVMe SSD drives, it is quickly obvious that Samsung’s models are some of the more expensive. The company has long established itself as a premium player, and the quality and consistency produce a higher price. Samsung clearly noticed a gap, though, releasing its 990 range earlier this year to sit between the 990 Pro and 990 Evo. And it’s the 990’s 1TB drive that we’ve spotted down to $200; a $30 (13%) drop from its list price.

Why we’d pick the Samsung SSD 990 1TB
Reliable speed for most users and systems
The Samsung SSD 990 1TB has respective read and write speeds of up to 7,150 MB/s and 6,450 MB/s. That’s plenty for DIY PC builders, game collectors, and other users who want to upgrade or expand their storage – and for everything from gaming to creative app use, and even video editing. The 990 Pro 1TB offers a bit more speed (7,450/6,900 MB/s), but it’s also a bit pricier, so the value of this deal is clear.
Balanced performance and power with value
The 990 1TB sits between the 990 Pro 1TB and the 990 Evo 1TB in that it balances the performance and the power efficiency of both in some regards, like a hybridization project. For example, Samsung reports the 990 1TB offers up to 38% improved performance per watt over the 990 Pro. However, the 990 1TB is currently cheaper than both Pro and Evo 1TB variants, making it the better value pick of the three.

Samsung quality and Samsung Magician
Samsung is a premium NVMe SSD brand because its drives are renowned as durable, stable, and consistent. That’s a real benefit if you’re comparing to lesser-known and less expensive options. As an added benefit, Samsung’s Magician utility is a useful tool for keeping on top of your Samsung SSD health. From firmware upgrades to daily monitoring and benchmarking, it has all you need if you’re keen on system stats and overviews.
What to consider before you buy
The price of the SSD 990 1TB NVMe drive makes it a good middle ground between Samsung’s own Pro and Evo models. However, it is currently more affordable than both and, surprisingly, matches the more value-focused Lexar NM790 1TB. Yet, the 990 1TB isn’t the most affordable option you can get from an established brand. That would go to the Kingston NV3 1TB, which is $40 cheaper at the time of writing…but also not as well-performing.
