It’s an excellent time to grab this Samsung Odyssey G5 at its best price right now on Amazon, as it currently has a solid 32% off and is going for just $149.99. As far as QHD gaming monitors go, that’s pretty affordable, especially considering it’s from one of the leading players in the space.

As usual, I’ll break down what you’re getting here below, but if you’re short on time, here are the headline specs and features. It’s 180Hz, QHD, has a VA panel, and supports HDR10. Sound basic? Well, in some senses it is, but that’s not a bad thing if you’re looking for something straightforward that will more than do the job for gaming, without completely blowing your budget. Here’s a closer look at what it brings to the table.

What we like about this Samsung 27-inch Odyssey G5 gaming monitor

27-inch and QHD gets you crisp and clear picture quality, without the added expense

Probably one of the most popular size-to-resolution offerings out there, which ensures that pixel density is kept high, but without needing to invest a tonne of cash into 4K-ready components.

180hz refresh rate is great for super smooth gaming, without being overkill

At this refresh rate, you can reach competitive gaming framerates while ensuring that you’re not overspending on a refresh rate you may not end up using.

Low 1ms MPRT response time helps to reduce ghosting

With FreeSync Premium also assisting with reducing stutter and screen tearing, having a response time this low primes this monitor to handle motion very well, especially for the price.

VA panel and quite impressive contrast

VA panels are generally better for deeper blacks than IPS, which is reflected in this monitor’s 3000:1 contrast ratio. Games should look quite atmospheric and cinematic on this monitor, as will HDR movies and content.

Black Equalizer for a competitive edge

This feature brightens darker areas when gaming, without over-exposing the rest. This means you can spot opponents lurking in the shadows, giving you a genuinely strong competitive edge.

Who is this monitor for?

It’s going to be good for anyone who has a decent but slightly lower-end QHD gaming PC setup, who doesn’t want to break the bank, and who also tends to play more competitive, fast-paced games over slow, cinematic titles. That’s largely down to the fact that its HDR performance here is decent, but not mind-blowing, while its refresh rate and response time are actually pretty good.

For better HDR alternatives, I’d suggest looking out for monitors with at least a DisplayHDR 400 certification, or potentially upping your budget to mini-LED realms.
