ASUS ROG Strix G16 Gaming Laptop, 16” Nebula Display

16:10 QHD 240Hz, GeForce RTX 4060, Intel® Core™ i9-14900HX, 16GB DDR5-5600, 1TB PCIe SSD, Wi-Fi 6E, Windows 11, G614JVR-ES94

What we like about the ASUS ROG Strix G16 RTX 4060

From a price and performance perspective, this laptop sits nicely in the mid-range, giving you everything you need for gaming in 1080p and 1440p, without breaking the bank. While it won’t be as powerful as an RTX 4070 laptop, it’ll be more than enough to play games at high-settings and its CPU will also be able to handle both gaming and multi-tasking easily – making it a good choice for both productivity and play.

  • RTX 4060 mobile: This card is capable of running 1080p games at high settings, and does well with QHD with less demanding titles, with DLSS greatly improving fps. It’s a good card if you lean towards more competitive, less demanding titles, that benefit from higher fps at lower resolutions, and an excellent entry point into gaming laptops in general.
  • Intel Core i9-14900HX: This 14th gen mobile CPU is actually a bit of a powerhouse, boasting 24 cores, 32 threads, a 5.8 GHz max turbo frequency, and 36MB cache. For gaming and multi-tasking, this is a great option to have in a more mid-range laptop, and real win for the price.
  • Latest RAM: You’ve got DDR5 RAM in this laptop, which is around twice as fast as DDR4. This essentially means you’re getting some good performance improvements, better efficiency, and higher data transfer rates. It’s a must if you’re running multiple applications, and want a more responsive feeling experience.
  • Ample storage: This laptop has a decent sized 1TB SSD, which is enough for fairly large gaming libraries. Oftentimes, it’s the bigger SSDs that drive up the price (and RAM), so this is a good way of keeping costs lower, and ensuring that you’re not paying for storage you won’t use.
  • Top-tier screen: The display has a lot going for it, most notably its 240hz refresh rate, which will allow for higher frames per second. It also has a 16:10 aspect ratio, meaning that it’s slightly taller than most QHD displays, giving you more screen real estate to work with and slightly higher pixel density.
  • WIFI 6E: Another feature found in higher end laptops, and one that’s arguably a more sensible choice for most people considering WiFI 7 hasn’t rolled out everywhere just yet. It’s known for providing faster speeds and lower latency than WIFI 6, and it’s less congested than 2.4 GHz and 5GHz bands too.
  • ASUS ROG design: When it comes to design, ASUS do a very good job of treading the line between a gamer and productivity aesthetic. This laptop could fit in anywhere, thanks to its tasteful use of RGB and stealthy outer chassis. A versatile choice, especially if you’re using it in more professional environments or with more minimal setups.

Is this deal for you?

I’d say that if you’re dipping your toe into gaming laptops, but don’t fancy going for the more ‘budget-orientated’ line-ups, such as ASUS TUF, Acer Nitro, and so on, this is a good option that’ll give you what you need for gaming, but won’t completely break the bank. At $1499.99 it’s definitely still an investment, so I’d suggest that if you are considering it, it’s worth making sure you’re going to take full advantage of its portability. If you’re someone who’s often on the move for work or if travel is a big part of your lifestyle, this is a great option, but if you think you’ll have this in a home office more often than not, I’d suggest going for a more powerful RTX 4070 gaming PC instead – many of which are a touch more expensive than this laptop, but will be able to perform better at 1440p and even a touch of 4K.

Overall though, this is an excellent mid-range option from one of the leaders in the space, and well worth considering at this new price.
