SAMSUNG 32″ Odyssey Neo G8
What I like about this monitor
- 4K at 32-inches: Personally, I think this is the sweet spot for 4K and the best size for most setups. It’s not too big that it completely dominates your space, but it’s big enough that it still offers an excellent sense of immersion.
- 1000R curve: The closer this number is to zero, the more aggressive the curve, so this hits sort of bang in the middle between immersion and practicality for other uses. Many actually think that this type of curve can reduce eye-strain too – another win if you plan on spending extended amounts of time gaming or working in front of this display.
- 240hz refresh rate: More common nowadays, but still very impressive to see with a 4K display. This refresh rate will allow for much higher frames per second gaming, which is ideal for fast-paced games such as first-person shooters.
- AMD FreeSync Premium Pro: The highest level of adaptive sync technology AMD has to offer, which should drastically reduce screen tearing.
- Matte display: Ideal for usage in well-lit rooms, and a must when it comes to reducing pesky glare and reflection.
- Ultrawide game view: You can switch this monitor to 21:9 aspect ratio, meaning you can increase your field of vision when playing different types of games. This is perfect if you want to be able to spot enemies hiding in the sides of the map, and can give you a competitive advantage.
- Core lighting: This monitor feature’s Samsung’s core lighting on the back, which can be either customized to your liking or used with CoreSync, which will match the colors of the screen to the lighting itself, adding yet another level of immersion only found in the best monitors on the market.
- 1ms response time: This is the measure of how quickly a pixel can change color, and a good indication of how it will perform with fast on screen movement. With 1ms, you can expect super smooth visuals with little ghosting.
- Super bright: This monitor has a peak brightness of 2000 nits and a contrast ration of 1,000,000:1. In short, it means that brights will be very bright, color will be vivid and vibrant, and the high contrast ration will make for more realistic, atmospheric visuals.
Should you go for it?
The Odyssey series is always very impressive, and despite this monitor being a couple years old, it still holds up with some of the best available. It’s definitely more for high-end PC builds that can make the most out of it, so I’d advise going for this if you have an RTX 4080 equivalent or above, as you’ll want to experience 4K at higher fps on this. The curve may not be for everyone, and I’d say it’s going to be better for gaming than general usage, as it’s really tailored towards increasing immersion. If you’re a designer, for instance, you may find a flat screen monitor preferable.
As for the price, I think it’s a decent deal, especially given the bells and whistles such as the core lighting, stunning design, and impressively bright screen. A quality monitor for sure, and one well worth considering for your setup.
