The Amazon Spring Sales are in full swing, and we’ve spotted plenty of amazing deals on all things tech. So, if you were waiting for the perfect chance to upgrade your setup, the time is now. We spotted this Ryzen 5 5500 CPU, which is already a budget processor, with a massive price cut.

Currently, it is available for $76, which is a 52% discount from its original price of $159. While this isn’t the latest or the most powerful processor available on the market, it is based on the AM4 platform, which is still being supported by AMD, and you’ll have plenty of AM4 CPUs to upgrade to in the future. That being said, for casual gaming and workflows, it should be fine, but it isn’t the best option for heavy multitasking.

AMD Ryzen™ 5 5500 with Wraith Stealth Cooler

6-Core, 12-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor

What we like about this CPU

  • Cores and threads: The Ryzen 5 5500 has 6 cores and 12 threads based on the Zen 3 (Cezanne) architecture, and its gaming performance isn’t that far off from the Ryzen 5 5600, which is based on the Zen 3 (Vermeer) architecture. So, it has excellent value, and its performance should be fine as long as the task at hand doesn’t require plenty of L3 cache, as it is limited to 19MB.
  • Low TDP: This processor has a 65W TDP, which is decent given the hardware it is packing. On top of that, it comes bundled with a Wraith Stealth cooler, which should be more than enough to keep it cool as it shouldn’t run hot even during heavy loads.
  • Boost clock speed: The Ryzen 5 5500 has a boost clock speed of 4.2GHz, meaning its cores can process 4.2 billion instructions per clock cycle, resulting in good performance. In addition, it is unlocked for overclocking, which means that you can push this clock speed even more for better output, but that will also raise its power draw and temperature.
  • AM4 platform: While all eyes are on the AM5 platform with the latest releases like the 9800X3D and 9950X3D, the upgrade to the AM5 platform is expensive as not only would you have to buy a new processor but also get DDR5 RAM as it doesn’t support DDR4 RAM. This isn’t an issue with the AM4 platform as it supports DDR4 RAM and has plenty of options to upgrade to in the future, such as the 5700X3D for better gaming performance or the Ryzen 9 5900X for increased productivity.

Is this deal worth it?

Whether this deal is worth it or not comes down to your specific use case, but here are our two cents on it. The AM4 platform was released in 2016, making it 9 years old now. In these 9 years, plenty of iterations of Ryzen 5000 processors have come out, and despite its age, AMD released two new AM4 processors in 2024, showcasing their long-lasting support. That being said, since it is an older platform, the supported processors cost less, but when they are on sale, they make for some of the best budget processors you can get.
