The AMD Ryzen 5 5600X still gets credit as a value-friendly PC part, even in 2026. The snappy Zen 3 part is a decent upgrade for systems with older AM4 CPUs. Plus, if you have a lower budget for a compact or desktop build, it will pair with modern midrange graphics cards. That’s enough for us to be keen on an Amazon deal that has the processor at $160, the lowest since June. The price is also $16 below the average cost on Amazon, according to price-tracker Camelcamelcamel.

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X with Wraith Stealth Cooler

6 cores, 12 threads, base clock of 3.7 GHz, boost up to 4.6 GHz, Zen 3 architecture, AM4 socket, Compatible with B450, B550, and X570 chipsets.32MB L3 cache, 65W TDP.

Why we’d pick the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

Perfect for a cost-friendly AM4 upgrade

We know there are still PCs out there with the Ryzen 5 3600 (and other older AM4 CPUs) installed. Upgrading to the 5600X will add new life to those systems, while still supporting the existing DDR4 RAM with a simple drop-in upgrade to your current motherboard. It will also leave some headroom for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D (for gaming) and the Ryzen 9 5950X (for productivity).

Pairs well with midrange GPUs

The Ryzen 5 5600X will start to bottleneck performance in more powerful GPUs. But you can still pair it with, say, an RX 9070 variant. For a more cost-focused combination, an RX 9060 XT 16GB, Intel ARC B580, or RTX 5060 Ti 16GB (less affordable, of course) will all combine for a handy up to 1440p gaming system for modern titles. Or go for something second-hand.

Decent productivity performance

This is budget-dependent, but the 5600X remains a competent productivity and daily-use CPU, especially at the deal price. It has six cores and 12 threads, and unless you’re keen to be a serious content creator, image/video editor, or need a reliable productivity PC for other professional means, it should fulfil most needs. The 5800XT will deliver more performance, but is over $200 as we write.

What to consider before you buy

The potential of building a Socket AM5 is always a consideration for AM4 builds or upgrades. However, Socket AM5 requires a larger budget because you will need a new motherboard and DDR5 RAM. For us, if your PC is struggling but your budget is small, upgrading to the 5600X only makes sense if you’re coming from an older CPU family. For new, lower-cost builds, it’s also a good pick if you don’t need the latest tech and the costs attached.
