Is the 4070 Ti better than the 3080 Ti?

Can the 3080 Ti top its newfound rival, the 4070 Ti, or is the newer card an avid beast in both price and performance

We’ve never seen a Ti outperforming a non-Ti model by as much as this new 4070 Ti does. In the last gen, the same happens to the 3080. The RTX 3080 Ti was a more expensive GPU that only delivered about 5%-10% better performance overall. So the competition of the RTX 4070 Ti vs the RTX 3080 Ti should not be too dissimilar from the results we’ve already seen in our previous review.

Nonetheless, it’s only fair to dive down into this comparison. Nvidia didn’t compare the new 4070 Ti with the 3090 or the 3080 Ti to show the best enhancements possible. However, they could’ve done it and it would be as impressive as any other comparisons.

According to the table above, we can see how the RTX 4070 Ti has fewer CUDA cores, as well as a lower memory bus and bandwidth than the 3080 Ti. Still, this doesn’t stop the GPU to overachieve in gaming and content creation.

Even though the 3080 Ti has more space and offers a seemingly faster speed to transfer data, the Ada Lovelace architecture of the 4070 Ti lets the new GPU perform tasks in a more efficient way. Thus, it needs less space and speed to do it better. This shows in the incredible difference in clock frequencies.

The RTX 3080 Ti closes the gap a bit in performance against the 4070 Ti. However, it can’t really deliver the same performance, so it still falls short in some activities. This is even more obvious when the graphics card is faced with games that are optimized for raytracing and when DLSS is on. Wherever these conditions are met, the performance of the 4070 Ti just flies across the board.

In conclusion, the 4070 Ti is more powerful and worthwhile than its current rival. And for the price, it’s even a smarter choice. For around the same price tag, you’ll get last-gen technologies, better performances, and a future-proofed rig.
