One of the most common questions about the iPhone 14 is whether it is waterproof. This is very understandable since the prospect of having a smartphone that can withstand water exposure is undoubtedly appealing, especially in situations where accidents happen.

In this post, we will explore the water resistance capabilities of the iPhone 14 and provide you with other essential details you need to know.

Is the iPhone 14 waterproof? No, it’s water resistant

The iPhone 14 series boasts an impressive water resistance rating. All four models, including the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, have an IP68 rating. IP ratings reflect protection against elements – dust, dirt resistance and water resistance – and are an IEC standard; the IEC being the International Electrotechnical Commission.

The IP68 rating signifies that devices are dust resistant (‘6’, being the highest). The second number shows they can withstand being submerged in fresh water up to a maximum depth of six meters (~19 feet) for a maximum duration of 30 minutes (‘8’ is the highest for water resistance).

While the iPhone 14’s water resistance rating is impressive, and it is a defense against liquid damage to a degree. But it’s important to understand its limitations: Apple makes it clear that water damage is not covered under warranty. Therefore, it is advisable not to intentionally submerge your iPhone 14 in water – that means no underwater photos.

This means it’s not impervious to being dropped in a river, lake, or ocean. It’s not advisable to purposely expose it to things like showers or saunas where there is high moisture – the water resistance it does have is a last line of defense and accidental damage should always be avoided.

How can I make my iPhone 14 more water-resistant?

To achieve a higher level of water protection, you can use a waterproof accessory like a phone case that fits your iPhone 14. However, it’s important to remember that even with a waterproof case, there is still a possibility of water seepage if the case is damaged or compromised.

Can I test my iPhone’s water resistance?

While there are apps available that claim to test your phone’s water resistance rating, their effectiveness is uncertain. It is not advisable to deliberately expose your iPhone 14 to water to test its water resistance capabilities. Instead, it is best to rely on the official IP68 rating and take necessary precautions to protect your device.

Which iPhone is fully waterproof?

No iPhone model is fully waterproof. Recent iPhones, including the new iPhone 15 models and 14 series, are designed to be water-resistant. However, it’s essential to understand that water resistance ratings are not permanent and can degrade over time.

Conclusion

The iPhone 14 is water-resistant with an impressive IP68 rating, but it is not a waterproof phone. While in testing it can withstand freshwater immersion up to six meters deep for 30 minutes, it is important to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary exposure to water. Ultimately, for indoor or outdoor activities especially where water is concerned, it’s best to keep your phone in a safer place than your hand or your pocket – as with most non-waterproof
