AMD: AI will play a ‘big part’ in FSR in the future, FMF also mentioned

It should no longer surprise anyone that tech firms are fully investing in AI, and they have been doing so for a while now. One area this relates to upscaling technology, which AMD, Nvidia, and Intel have been pushing for their latest generations of graphics cards. FSR is AMD’s open-source upscaling solution, providing performance boosts to as many games as possible. They’ve been a little behind the competition in terms of AI implementation, but the future is looking bright.
We’ve recently been in contact with AMD’s Product and Business Development Manager, Martijn Boonstra, discussing topics from socket longevity to Artificial Intelligence, and we’re of course here to talk about the AI aspect today. When bringing up the topic of AI, Martijn noted that “AI is absolutely huge right now”, though they’ve “just barely scratched the surface on it”.

FSR and FMF to benefit from AI
Both FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) and FMF (AMD Fluid Motion Frames) are mentioned, the latter being AMD’s version of frame generation technology. In our interview, Martijn says that AI is “the Internet moment for PC and desktop or mobile” – showing it’s a big deal that will affect several platforms. He goes on to say that FSR and FMF are there to “improve frame rates” and “improve performance”, noting that “AI will also play a big part and a big role in that in the future as well for gaming”.
With the development of this technology ongoing and support becoming widespread (you can find a list of FSR supported game by version here), AI integration is becoming more and more important if AMD wants to keep up with the likes of Nvidia and its equivalent DLSS tech.
AMD and AI integration
AI integration is already impacting how the performance of games is handled, and it will also change the way we play games in general. Martijn discusses AI integration in relation to some other areas we haven’t really thought about, such as game development – “whether it’s on the local, on the client side, or via data center or cloud based”.
Another topic would be aiding your “immersive gaming experience”. In a similar vain to Nvidia’s recently-announced Product G-Assist, Martijn says that “a helper when you play your game, maybe walkthroughs” is the next step forward, nothing that this will be useful for young players struggling with a new game, like many of us once did.
