AMD’s latest RDNA 4 GPUs, the RX 9070 XT and its non-XT counterpart, have finally arrived, and initial reviews called them a “no-brainer” against Nvidia’s RTX 50 series alternatives. Alongside the GPUs’ solid raw performance, we also have the all-new and improved upscaling and frame-gen technology, FSR 4, which is the first in the series to incorporate AI. However, AMD isn’t the only one that helped narrow the gap between FSR 4 and DLSS 4, as another company co-developed the technology.

That company is Sony, and the red team shared the announcement over on Twitter, stating, “FSR 4 is looking fantastic! Excited for the co-development with Sony Interactive Entertainment on the models used for the FSR 4 upscaler.” However, this partnership will likely bring even more to the table, especially for PlayStation users, in the form of improved PSSR.

What could this mean for PSSR?

For those unaware, PSSR is PlayStation’s upscaling technology designed to boost frame rates and is essentially Sony's attempt at breaking into AI-powered upscaling. The technology is exclusive to the more powerful PS5 Pro consoles, and while it’s a lot simpler to use compared to DLSS, Sony did a pretty great job implementing it. However, many suspect that its proper debut will come with the PS6, thanks to more powerful hardware, and this is where AMD’s role could come in.

Unlike Sony, which is just starting to step into AI upscaling, AMD has been involved for quite some time now. With FSR 4, the red team has undoubtedly delivered the best results we’ve seen so far. It hasn't overtaken Nvidia by any means, but it has surpassed Nvidia's DLSS 3 CNN model, something some may not have expected. So, AMD's years of experience in AI-based upscaling could provide valuable expertise in unlocking the full potential and capabilities of PSSR.

There’s more to come

This, of course, isn’t the first time these companies have collaborated, as Sony has been working with AMD for years to develop multiple generations of the PlayStation. In fact, the two companies took this partnership even further with last year’s announcement of Project Amethyst, which focuses on using AI to improve the PC and console gaming experience. That said, while we have yet to see how much AMD contributes to PSSR, this is nonetheless a major win for console gaming.
