Fans have practically been asking for FSR 4 support on RDNA 3 graphics cards since it was originally released back in March last year alongside the RX 9000 series, headlined by the flagship RX 9070 XT. AMD has remained silent on bringing backwards compatibility – until now. Team Red has finally announced support for FSR Upscaling 4.1 on Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs in July.

Better yet, RDNA 2 (RX 6000 series) GPU owners will also be getting official support, though this doesn’t arrive until 2027. FSR Redstone is the umbrella name for the whole suite, while FSR 4.1 refers to the latest version of the upscaling portion. We’d say that pleas for older GPU support ramped up when enthusiasts turned to the fan-made OptiScaler mod to get the job done.

FSR 4.1 Upscaling on RDNA 3 this July, and RDNA 2 in early 2027

“This July, RDNA 3 players will experience FSR Upscaling 4.1, delivering sharper visuals and smoother gameplay than ever before. Even without dedicated floating point AI hardware, gamers everywhere will be able to enjoy the benefits of machine learning upscaling on their Radeon 7000 Series.

And for our RDNA 2 players, we have something exciting coming in early 2027. FSR Upscaling 4.1 will be coming to your cards as well, bringing sharper visuals and smoother gameplay to even more gamers.”

Jack Huynh, SVP and GM of Computer & Graphics at AMD

When support for the RX 7000 series arrives in July, there will be “over 300 supported games at launch” – presumably, this number will be even higher by the time RX 6000 series support happens early next year.

Huynh says that bringing FSR Upscaling 4.1 to the RDNA 3 architecture was “an exciting challenge”. The reason why it has taken until now to be officially released has to do with the onboard hardware. The RX 9000 series with RDNA 4 architecture features FP8 (floating point) AI acceleration to make machine learning easier. RDNA 3 and older generations do not have this. Instead, AMD has been spending its time optimizing the existing INT8 (integer) AI accelerator to maintain the same level of quality.
