AMD finally confirms what the GRE stands for in its Radeon RX 7650 GRE graphics card

AMD has revealed what the GRE at the end of the China-exclusive RX 7650 GRE stands for. The card, which is the first GPU launch from AMD in 2025 albeit just in China, boasts 8GB of VRAM and an overclock compared to the standard RX 7600. The exclusive GPU arrives just ahead of the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT launch worldwide this March.
Following the launches of the RX 7900 GRE and RX 6750 GRE in 2023, it was widely reported that the acronym related to the Year of the Rabbit (Golden Rabbit Edition), was in line with the Chinese calendar. Well, we’re no longer in the year of the Rabbit.
GRE now stands for Great Radeon Edition
Now, AMD has confirmed the GRE stands for ‘Great Radeon Edition’, as per Chinese media reports – and this post on the blogging platform Weibo. Sitting between the RX 7600 8GB and the XT 16GB variant, the 7650GRE runs on RDNA 3, and as a result of its overclock, which takes the card from up to 2695 MHz from the RX 7600’s 2655 MHz (boost clock), the power rating has been hiked from 165W to 170W.
The RX 7650 GRE, which will only be available in China, will not have a reference model, and instead just come in variants from partners including ASUS and Sapphire. While it may be strange that AMD is launching an RDNA 3 card so close to the newer models coming out, there are thoughts that this could be a way to clear excess inventory. It remains to be seen if it finds an audience in the market.
