Just as we’re all primed and ready for the launch of the Ryzen 9000 series CPUs, some interesting news has broke regarding another set of AMD processors in the pipeline. In case you’re unaware, AMD’s latest generation of desktop CPUs is coming at the end of July.
Their performance will be significantly better than the existing lineup of processors, so a good portion of PC users might consider upgrading when they hit the market. However, AMD now appears to be planning to launch rebranded versions of some old Athlon or Ryzen 3 processors, which will be affordable and compatible with the AM5 socket.

AMD will reportedly launch new Ryzen 3 or Athlon CPUs
AMD’s upcoming processors won’t be cheap, especially the high-end models. So, affordability will be a big concern when the 9000 series launches, as those on a budget might struggle to upgrade. However, according to a recent report from Bits and Chips, AMD is working on creating affordable CPUs compatible with the latest AM5 socket.
If the report is accurate, AMD fans will soon have more affordable options. Instead of developing entirely new processors, AMD plans to rebrand low-end Ryzen 7000 CPUs by transitioning them to the TSMC 7nm node while retaining compatibility with the AM5 socket. Currently, these CPUs are manufactured using a 5nm process, which is more advanced (the smaller the better in this case), but more expensive to manufacture.
Bits and Chips also mention that the prices of these processors will be much lower than the existing options, and we can expect to see CPUs under $100. In other words, they’ll be some of the most affordable processors for the AM5 Socket. This will also make the AM5 platform more accessible to budget PC builders. However, it’s important to note that this information is based on rumors, and AMD has yet to officially confirm these plans.
What is the cheapest AM5 CPU right now?
At the moment, the cheapest AMD AM5 CPU title belongs to the Ryzen 5 7500F – a budget 6-core CPU that you can find for around $119. However, the 7500F is a little more exclusive to certain markets than alternatives such as the 7600, which goes for $193 at the time of writing.
You’ll notice that the very bottom of the 7000 series (which is the first generation to use the AM5 socket) doesn’t even feature a Ryzen 3 tier, and you’d have to go back to the 3000 series to find one. That’s if we were to ignore the APU-focused 8000 and 4000 series. Either way, we’re excited to see more inexpensive options for the budget builders out there.
